Llandovery v Bargoed Match Report

Bargoed travelled to Llandovery looking for their first win in the Premiership following the narrow last minute defeat to Neath on the opening weekend but were blown away by a very impressive display of hard running rugby by the Drovers.

Live wire full back Lee Rees punished some slack defence to open the score with just 2 minutes on the  clock and was in the thick of it minutes later with a tap and go penalty to put wing Mike Evans over to make it 12-0 with Jack Maynard's conversion.

Steffan Jouxson succumbed to an early injury and was replaced by James Locke in the Bargoed back row.

The Bulls however, regained some composure and narrowed the gap with a well taken try from a lineout on the halfway. Centre Lewis Protheroe punched a hole through the midfield supported by Darren Humphries, Callum Jones hit the line from full back and David Evans slipped inside to take the pass and cross for the try, converted by Sam Withers.

Maynard slotted a penalty to extend the lead and the Drovers' third try came from a scrum on halfway. Lee Rees was again the catalyst taking the ball at pace and putting centre Craig Woodall over to make it 20-7 after 26 minutes.

Bargoed's injury worries continued with Callum Jones and number eight Lee Beech leaving the field.

The bonus point came for the home side just before half time, Jack Maynard scoring and converting his own try. 27-7 at the break.

Bargoed weathered a scrappy third quarter rather well but a spate of yellow cards changed the flow of the game. First off was Bargoed's James Locke for a shoulder charge off the ball on 53 minutes, followed by wing Ashley Norton for a high tackle 2 minutes later, in which he was also injured,  ending the game for him. Llandovery 's Shaun Miles joined them in the sin bin on 57 minutes for a dangerous tackle on the fringes of a ruck. So for a while it was fourteen against thirteen.

A scrum opportunity close to the Bargoed line saw the home side pull in centre Craig Woodall on the flank. Under pressure from the extra man and one short in the back line Bargoed were twice penalised and eventually referee Aled Evans went under the posts for a penalty try to take the score to 34-7 with 63 minutes gone.

Bargoed emptied the bench but it wasn't enough to stem the tide and two late tries in the dying minutes from Miles and wing Aaron Warren took the score to 48-7.

Chairman Neil Carter summed up the mood "We were out-thought and outplayed today by a very dynamic and physical Llandovery. We have rarely come up against this level of pace and intensity but we will take it on the chin and learn from the experience - being involved in games with this quality of rugby is why we wanted to be in the Premiership and we'll put things right in training when we prepare for Swansea next weekend".
