Cardiff 30 Bargoed 22

This will go down as one of the most frustrating defeats Bargoed will have suffered this season. Having had something like 70% possession and territory and outscoring the home side by three tries to two, they nevertheless lost out to to the boot of Cardiff outside half Diggy Bird who slotted five penalties and a conversion. The Bargoed supporters were not best pleased with referee Dai Cambourne's decisions at the scrum which accounted for the lion's share of the penalties awarded to Cardiff despite the Bulls pack getting the upper hand and which eventually saw their loose-head prop Rhys Morgan finish the game in the bin.

Bird put Cardiff ahead with just 3 minutes on the clock before Bargoed responded with sustained pressure in the Cardiff twenty two but when the defenders infringed Calum Jones was unable to convert the penalty into points. Back down the other end of the field Bird put over his second to make it 6-0. Two minutes later and Bird put in a slide rule low cross-kick which looked as if it was going out but Ollie Smith picked up superbly and went over for the first try. Bird converted from the touchline and Cardiff were 13-0 up having only been in Bargoed's half three times, scoring on each occasion.

Again Bargoed responded well and hammered away at the well organised Cardiff defence which finally broke five minutes before half time. Scrum half James Pizey gratefully received off-the-top line out ball and danced his way through for a well-deserved score. Jones' conversion failed and Bird added another penalty, matched by Bargoed full back James Hallet, taking over the kicking duties while Calum Jones was receiving treatment - 16-8 at the break.

Bargoed came out full of intent and again camped in the Cardiff half but every time the home side ventured out they picked up points. Bird put over penalties on 45 and 50 minutes to make it 22-8.

Rhys Morgan had come on at half time to replace Jack Williams and got on to the scoresheet having been driven over by the pack with a well controlled driving maul. Calum Jones added the extras and Bargoed were back in the game at 22-15.

Cardiff centre Harri Griffiths restored the gap with a well taken try, Bird this time hitting a post with the conversion to make it 27-15.

A great midfield move almost paid off for the Bulls with fine work from James Locke and Grant Rogers but replacement Alex Herbert knocked on with the line begging. The scrum went down and referee Cambourne did nothing to improve the mood of the travelling supporters by flashing a yellow card to prop Rhys Morgan with six minutes left.

However, Bargoed stuck to their task but another knock on with a clear run to the line suggested that it was not going to be Bargoed's day - this time centre Lewis Bowden slipped up but redeemed himself moment's later powering over for Bargoed's third try converted by Hallett to put the Bulls in with a shout, at 27-22, of pulling off what would have been a remarkable bonus point win.

Bargoed, still a man down piled on the pressure but just when it looked as though they might have to settle for a losing bonus point even that was taken away with yet another penalty at the scrum converted by replacement Gareth Tomlinson. An unsatisfactory end for the Bulls, going home with nothing to show despite a very strong all round performance as the game ended 30-22.
