Bargoed 5 Bedwas 17

Bargoed slipped to another narrow defeat in the Principality Premiership and crucially were denied a losing bonus point with Bedwas picking up their only try with the last move of the game.

The Bulls had been on top during much of the first quarter with the scrum looking particularly strong and it was from an attacking scrum that the first try came. Just five metres out and the home pack drove Bedwas back over their own line. The crowd were baying for a penalty try but referee Aled Evans awarded a penalty and Bargoed captain Rhys Morgan called another scrum. The drive came on and down it went, this time referee Evans called a reset and it was more of the same with the Bargoed eight powering forward and with advantage being played number eight Ross Coombes crossed the line. Calum Jones' difficult conversion attempt failed but Bargoed were 5-0 up after 17 minutes.

Bargoed didn't deal with the restart kick well and were penalised for not releasing giving outside half James Dixon an easy three points to immediately close the gap.

The home side continued to maintain the upper hand but couldn't convert field position into points and another Dixon penalty on 36 minutes allowed Bedwas to go in at the break 5-6 up.

Bargoed again started strongly and more than held their own for much of the third quarter before Dixon added another penalty when a Bargoed defender was penalised for not rolling away in the tackle to take the score to 5-9. It looked like it would be a tight finish until Bargoed hooker Ian Jenkins was penalised for not using his arms in a tackle although it seemed a harsh call as it looked more like a collision than an attempted shoulder charge. Dixon converted and Bedwas took a seven point lead at 5-12 with four minutes left.

The clock was past eighty and it looked like Bargoed would have to settle for a losing bonus point but even that was denied them with a speculative chip to the corner and a foot race saw wing Pat Lewis compete with the Bargoed defenders for the touchdown. The referee was unsighted and with both sides claiming the grounding, it was left to the touch judge to make the call and it went Bedwas' way. The conversion was pushed wide and that was it with the scoreboard showing 5-17.
