Fosters Challenge Cup: Bargoed 7 Merthyr 38

Bargoed entertained Premiership high flyers and old rivals Merthyr for their inaugural match in the Fosters Challenge Cup but the Ironmen proved too strong for a much changed Bargoed starting fifteen.

Two early tries saw the visitors take a 14 point lead in the first eight minutes. The Bulls rallied but fell further behind to a 31st minute try from a driving maul which saw hooker Matthew Dwyer pick up his second score of the half and that was followed up with a fine solo effort from Kyle Evans. Dean Gunter added three out of four conversions and Merthyr were 26-0 at the break.

Bargoed were much more competitive in the second half but the efficient Merthyr driving maul was in evidence again as they rumbled over for a fifth try on 55 minutes, again converted by Gunter.

The Bulls' bench was deployed on the hour and immediately the scrum put Merthyr under pressure for the first time in the game. A big drive for the Bargoed eight put the home side on the front foot and Luke Smalley punched a hole through the centre, full back Jordan Purcell took it on but was held up. Quick recycling saw the ball moved quickly across the backs and great hands from front rower Ian Jenkins put Josh Moscardino in at the corner. Greg Callow added the extras and Bargoed were on the scoreboard with 17 minutes left.

Merthyr went further ahead with an unconverted try just minutes later and late pressure from Bargoed kept Merthyr pinned in their twenty two but they held out to win by 38-7.

The hard games keep on coming with  Ebbw Vale away next Wednesday in the second round.
