Bargoed 53 Maesteg Quins 0

Bargoed entertained Maesteg Quins at Bargoed Park in glorious conditions in their first home game of the season in a National Championship tie.

Bargoed looked edgy early on with some errors coupled with poor discipline. However they then started to develop their attack and after 10 minutes they managed to get a try from centre Rhys Humphries to lead 5-0.

They increased the lead on 20 minutes after the Quins infringed, and Steffan Jones kicked the penalty to make it 8-0.

Bargoed now started to dominate possession with their effective set piece game, and after a period of pressure Ronny Kynes went over for the second try and increased the lead after 31 minutes.

Bargoed’s indiscipline was taking away momentum and costing them, as they tried to get a foothold in Quins territory, and the first half ended 13-0.

The home side started the second half well, and after good work by Darren Humphries and Steffan Thomas it was Humphries who got the opening try after less than two minutes of the second half. Steffan Jones converted to make it 20-0.

They then increased the lead with another two tries in the space of 10 minutes with Jack Bunyan going over, and then Darren Humphries got his second after great approach work on both occasions by forwards and backs.

Bargoed were now using their potent attack to good effect and when Rhys Humphries cut a great line, Steffan Thomas and Josh Prosser combined for Prosser to score in the corner to make it 39-0.

The Quins fought back and applied pressure with Bargoed conceding a series of penalties, and this saw Ronny Kynes being yellow carded for a contact area infringement.

The home side defended well and turned defence to attack with good work by John Lavender, Matt Thomas and Grant Rogers in getting the ball wide, which saw Steffan Thomas get his first try in Bargoed colours, Jones converted to make it 46-0.

The final score saw Darren Humphries get his hat trick after a kick and chase from Prosser, Jones converted which saw Bargoed home 53-0.

The Coaching Staff were pleased with the performance and effort of the players, particularly in the last 10 minutes when down to 14 players. This was a complete performance in both attack and defence against a well organised and dogged Quins outfit.
