Warriors & Youth Reports

Bargoed Warriors travelled to Mountain Ash for a friendly after Pontllanfraith pulled out of the WRU Bowl fixture earlier in the week.

This was a keenly contested game with both sides fielding a number of youth team graduates. Both sides played an attractive brand by looking to attack with ball in hand.

Mountain Ash scored first with a well constructed try which was converted. Bargoed got back and after hooker Craig Owen went close, wing Kayne Greenslade went over for a try. Luke Ellaway went over shortly after, only to be called back for a forward pass. Half time 7-5 to Mountain Ash.

The second half saw Bargoed have a lot of pressure but ultimately they failed to score with Chris Cuss, Gary Phillips and Jason James all going close. It looked like they had finally broken through when the impressive Jordan Purcell went over in the corner only to be called as having a foot in touch.

Veteran Ian Jenkins managed to get over minutes later though and Niall Alexander added the extras for a 12-5 lead.

Mountain Ash took the lead shortly after when a couple of pick and drives saw them score to make it 12-12.

Bargoed bounced back but good defence saw Mountain Ash keep them out before conceding a penalty late on. Alexander stepped up and kicked the penalty to win the game 15-12 in what was a great advert for 2nd XV rugby.

There some good performances from some of the younger players who have graduated from the youth team, with Morgan Rowland’s working hard in the back row, and Niall Alexander impressing.

Jason James was once again outstanding with Jason Angel doing the dirty work alongside him, and Owen Cooper also showing up well.

However the Coaches will also be concerned with injuries to a number of players stretching the resources before next week’s Conference match against Rhiwbina.

Bargoed Youth travelled  to Cwmbran for a friendly with a young looking side taking the field, as they look to use all the squad. They came away with a 22-12 victory against a well organised side. The Coaching and Management will be pleased and encouraged by the performance of the young Bulls, with a number of frontline players rested or on the bench.

This group really are building a special feel within the squad. With good numbers in training every week, excellent attitudes and a real team spirit throughout, the expectations are high that they can do well this season, and make a real impression in the league and cup.
