Bargoed Briefs

There was a mixed bag of results on the weekend, with the 1st XV losing out in a SWALEC Cup tie at Llandovery, the Warriors winning down at local rivals Fleur de Lys and the Youth going down to Newbridge.

The 1st XV can count themselves unlucky as the 27-5 score line flattered the home side. Bargoed have certainly improved since their early season visit to The Drovers. The team have adapted well to life in the Premiership but in this one, a mixture of missed opportunities, yellow cards and conceding at critical times resulted in them not getting their just rewards. The Drovers were far more clinical than the Bulls, and although Bargoed probably edged the territorial battle, it was the home side that got the vital scores.

The Warriors managed to get over the line in a tight affair against local rivals Fleur de Lys RFC, who are coached by ex Bargoed Captain and Youth Team Coach, Gwyn Morris. Bargoed managed to score three tries from Lawson Perry, Chris Mapps and veteran utility skipper Ian Jenkins, in a good 23-20 victory (See match report)

The Youth travelled to Newbridge RFC to play them in a league game. They had already faced the Gwent Galacticos twice, and on on the last occasion they lost out 53-7 to a side packed with players with Regional Age Grade experience. Bargoed showed plenty of character in this encounter and looked the livelier of the two sides in the first half, but ended up 5-3 down at half time, with a sole penalty from Ben Jones, all they had to show for all their period of sustained pressure.

Newbridge were quicker out of the blocks at the start of the second half and showed their quality, and managed to score three tries in 15 minutes to lead 20-3. Bargoed again had chances but failed to convert this into points and that was how the game ended. Another step in the right direction from this developing group of players, but they will be disappointed not to have crossed the whitewash. There were some good performances from Jay Moon, Morgan Lloyd and Luke Cusack working hard up front, with Ieuan Morgan, Adam Rees and Ben Jones showing some nice touches behind the scrum.

This week the senior side travel to Hawick Harlequins RFC for the 51st year of association between the clubs. Bargoed will face The Quins on the artificial surface at Hawick and will be looking to retain The Butters Cup that they won last season. It will be great to renew old friendships north of the border in what is always a great weekend.

The Youth have a game on Friday evening away at Penygraig and will be looking to push on for a strong finish in both the District Cup and Dragons League.
