Bargoed Briefs

This Saturday the 1st XV are finally back in action, with a friendly away to Aberavon. The Coaches will be looking for the boys to hit the ground running in preparation for the Premiership league visit to Llanelli the following week.

The 2nd XV are await against Senghenydd in a league fixture, and the Youth, who also haven't been able to get a game the last two weeks, return to action as they entertain Abercyno at home in a friendly with a 2.00 p.m. Kick off.

There was no 1st XV game again last weekend, with the stop start fragmented season continuing into March. However there was a ray of hope with a superlative (as Alan Lovell would say) performance from the young guns in the Warriors. They faced a stern challenge in quality outfit Beddau RFC 2nd XV. The weather was great and the display of attack focussed rugby was even better. Both sides looked to move the ball at every opportunity.

It was Bargoed who took an early lead but Beddau fought back gallantly and managed to get over for two tries, but in the end it was the Warriors who came out on top. There were tries for Hywel Ennis (with dive of the day!), Adam Jones, Luke Ellaway, and two for strong ball carrying Lewis Lippiett. There were also two hat tricks, one for veteran Ian 'Sergio Parisse' Jenkins and another for returning from injury wing Ashley Norton, who was a constant threat with ball in hand.Lawson Birch-Perry chipped in with five conversions in the 71-12 victory.

Good to to see the Bargoed production line continuing to develop local boys with a no. of the current Youth team in the squad for the game. There were debuts for promising second row Jay Moon, wing Alex Button, and Adam Jones also came off the bench in another fine performance that has seen him enter the reckoning for the 1st XV next season as he transitions from the Youth side into senior rugby. Well done lads.

This talk of young guns and producing players, resulted in some debate about the no. of players produced by Bargoed who are currently involved in Premiership or Regional rugby. Three of the Bargoed Alumni went into regional rugby in recent years with Steffan Jones, Jonathan Evans, and Ieuan Jones all playing in the Dragons before moving on to pastures new. Ieuan is currently playing for Cross Keys and had a fine game recently against his old club, Jonathan is doing well at The Scarlets, with some fine performances this season, and Steffan moved over the border to play in the English Championship with Bedford, after representing not only the Dragons but Wales 7's as well.

There are thirteen players who are currently in the 1st XV squad, who all came through the development system at Bargoed, and when you add Josh Prosser at Cross Keys and James Richards at Bedwas, then there are eighteen players produced by Bargoed currently playing professional or semi-pro rugby, which is some achievement, a great production line, good work lads!!
