Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed Briefs

It was a mixed weekend for Bargoed RFC in terms of results with the 1st XV winning at Bedwas RFC but the Warriors lost out in the Cup semi final to a strong Brecon RFC side.

The 1st XV travelled to Bedwas knowing that this is always a difficult game, and a real test, particularly after Bargoed’s recent victory in the Championship Cup semi final.

Bargoed also needed to perform and back up last week’s fine performance in the Championship
Cup Final at the Principality Stadium.

However it was Bedwas who opened the scoring with a try after only 3 minutes.

Bargoed struck back and from a driving line-out it was hooker Morgan Edwards who crashed over and Josh Prosser converted to make it 7-5.

Bargoed started to get into their game and dominating territory and possession, and this resulted in Prosser increasing the lead with a penalty.

Bargoed went close with Ashley Norton getting tackled as he looked to add to his four tries in the cup final the week before.

The visitors continued to attack and went close after good work by the second row pair of Locke and Edmonds both showing some deft handling.

The Bulls got their second try after some great attacking play with Keaton Davies and Geraint Edmonds prominent in making the hard yards before Matthew Lewis finished superbly under the posters and Prosser converted to make it 17-5.

Bedwas started to get some field position in the Bargoed half playing into the wind but good defence held them out until a penalty was conceded just before half time which enabled the hosts to cut the lead and it was 17-8 to Bargoed at half time.

Bedwas started the second half playing with the wind and used their effective kicking game to apply pressure. Bargoed were camped in their 22 for a significant period of time but defended superbly and managed to break out of defence.

Bargoed managed to increase the lead when Calum Jones scored a try and Prosser added the extras.

Bargoed were now playing with confidence against a side who had troubled them in the first half and early in the second period.

Bargoed capitalised on this with James Leadbeater sniping and breaking through for a try converted by Josh Prosser.

Bargoed made some changes at half time and early in the second half with Josh Parry, Tomoya Adachi, Rhys Stephens and Jordan Howells making an impact.

The visitors continued to stick to their attacking principles in difficult conditions and were rewarded with a try from Dylan Williams converted by Prosser and the visitors closed the game out with a well deserved 36-8 victory.

This week the 1st XV travel to Treorchy in another National Championship East fixture as they try to chase down Cardiff Met for the title. The Oval at Treorchy is always a difficult place to play, so Bargoed will need to be on their game against a side who have improved significantly in recent weeks.
