Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed RFC had another great weekend at the Aberaeron Sevens Tournament on the Bank Holiday weekend. The Mini and Juniors made the annual pilgrimage, and were in action on Friday along with the Youth on Saturday and the Seniors on Sunday.

The weather wasn’t great but  that certainly didn’t dampen the Bargoed spirit. The Under 15’s did really well and just lost out in the semi final. The Youth had two teams in the tournament on Saturday and the A side lost in the semi final to the eventual winners Crymych, and the Development side narrowly lost out in the Plate Final against Aberaeron.

The Senior side had played against Bridgend the previous day in a pre season warm up, so most of the boys were doubling up. They lost their first game to invitation side and eventual cup winners, the Goggerddon Ravens. However they scraped through the next game to beat hosts Aberaeron and move into the Cup quarter finals where they lost out 15-12 to a pacy Penallta outfit.

They moved into the semi finals of the Plate where they faced the Carmarthen Warrior Legends, and came out on top to progress to the final to meet Aberaeron again.

It was great to see the hosts fielding a very quick and well coached outfit, in what turned out to be a really entertaining game, that swung both ways before the Bulls came out on top.

Bargoed were patched up having picked up a couple of injuries along the way, but really dug in after going behind early on. They worked really hard and in a good performance came out on top 26-12.

It was good to see Jason James back in Bargoed colours and along with hard working forwards Grant Rogers and Alex Herbert, they all put some real mileage in. Callum Jones and Josh Prosser were pulling the strings behind, and with Duane Dyer and Matt Billett running hard throughout, this was a real team effort.

Congratulations to the players from Bargoed RFC under 15’s who have made the Rhymney Valley squad for the forthcoming season.  Well done to Ieuan  Vokes, Charlie Davies, Callum Whatmore, Morgan Smith, Dylan Rodgers, Owen James, Morgan Williams.
Enjoy the experience lads.
