Newport 14 Bargoed 35

Bargoed registered their second away bonus point victory of the season with a 35-14 defeat of Newport at a rain-swept Rodney Parade on Sunday afternoon. In doing so they leapfrogged Ebbw Vale, Crosskeys and the Black and Ambers to rise to fifth in the East Premiership, one place behind next Saturday’s opponents Merthyr.

The Bulls hit the ground running with two quickfire tries from number eight Ieuan Jones, one converted by fullback Matthew Lewis.

Matt O’Brien hit back for Newport converting his own try before Lewis responded with a penalty to make it 7-15.  Ieuan Jones and flanker Alex Herbert were yellow carded in quick succession just before the break and this allowed Newport to close the half with a Chay Smith try converted by O’Brien to narrow the gap to 14-15.

That was as good as it got for Newport with a resilient Bargoed 13 holding out before the sin binners returned and shortly after, scrum half James Pizey scored on 52 minutes converted by Lewis. The bonus point try came just after the hour mark with Alex Herbert claiming the score and Matthew Lewis converting. Lewis rounded off a fine kicking display with two further penalties making the final score 14-35.
