Bargoed Briefs

1st XV Match Report

Bargoed travelled west to Ystalyfera RFC in a National Championship game, looking to keep the pressure on Neath and Pontypool at the top of the league.

Bargoed started well with a period of sustained pressure and opened the scoring after 14 minutes when a driving line-out was illegally pulled down as it went over the line, for a penalty try to be awarded.

Bargoed conceded a penalty two minutes later and the home side kicked it and reduced the lead to 7-3.

The Bulls responded well and after a good build up Matthew Lewis put Keegan Bale though to score under the posts, Lewis converted and Bargoed led 14-3.

The home side were causing Bargoed some problems and were very competitive in the contact area, but Bargoed countered well and after some scrum pressure, Captain James Leadbeater sniped over with Lewis again converting to lead 21-3 at half time.

The second half saw Bargoed strike early after a patient build up lock Geraint Edmonds crashed over from close range, Lewis again converted and they extended the lead to 28-3.

Bargoed scored again after 65 minutes when Tom Rice peeled off a driving line-out to crash over. Josh Prosser converted to make it 35-3.

Bargoed had a couple of opportunities but failed to capitalise late on with unforced errors and dogged defence from the hosts contributing to this.

There were some excellent performances with Tom Rice, Keaton Davies, Wade Langley and Ali Gardiner-Key in good form up front and James Leadbeater the stand out behind the scrum.

Bargoed remain third in the table, three points behind leaders Neath.

The Coaching Staff will be pleased with the result, but there are plenty of work ons before the visit of Cross Keys RFC next week.
