Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed Briefs

The 1st XV travelled to Cardiff Met RFC on Saturday and came away with a bonus point win, in an entertaining game, with eleven tries scored.

Bargoed started well playing into a difficult first half wind with Steff Jones kicking a penalty after 20 minutes to break the stalemate.

Bargoed had a couple of opportunities to increase the lead but a lack of accuracy resulted in the students being able to breakout and eventually score to take the lead 7-3 with 32 minutes played.

It looked like Bargoed would be within range of the Met going into the second half but the home side had other ideas and blitzed Bargoed with three tries in quick succession.

Cardiff Met scored a second try from close range to increase the lead to 14-3, and then scored again to lead 19-3

Bargoed responded and got a foothold in the Met half but as they moved the ball wide it was intercepted and the students scored  again to lead 26-3

Bargoed knew that they had to respond before half time and they kept their composure and the ball to score a penalty try when a driving maul was illegally stopped.

There were four tries scored, three from the Met and one from Bargoed in eight minutes before half time.

Bargoed started the second half looking for an early score, and a patient build up saw Steff Jones take a great line to cross and close the gap to 26-15.

Bargoed had the ascendency with their pack on top at set piece and good work from Ollie Andrews saw Duane Dyer cross in the corner, with Jones converting to make it 26- 22

The hosts then kicked a penalty to lead 29-22 and then kicked a second penalty to lead by 10 points. Bargoed responded superbly with a dominant scrum close to the Met line which resulted in a second penalty try and the Bulls now trailed 32-29 in this series saw battle.

Bargoed took the lead with eight minutes to go after a piece of individual brilliance by Steff Jones,  who found some space and pierced the Met defence before offloading to replacement hooker Lewys Lippiett, who scored. Jones converted to give Bargoed the lead at 36-32.

Cardiff Met continued to look for the winning score but Bargoed’s defence was resolute and they managed to clear their lines to close the game out.

Bargoed displayed great resilience to bounce back from 26-3 down, and will be pleased with the bonus point win against a well organised Met outfit. However they know that there are work ons for this week, to increase their accuracy in certain aspects of the game.

This was a superbly entertaining game and a great advert for National Championship rugby with plenty of thrills, spills and some controversy in a game that ebbed and flowed and was expertly refereed.

The Warriors entertained Penallta at home in another National Athletic Conference game, but it was the Pitmen who came out on top 43-27 in a high scoring game, with Bargoed scoring four tries through Jake Thomas, Aaron Elliott, Ieuan Evans and Ian Jenkins.

Bargoed had a makeshift back division with a number of players unavailable. However they worked hard throughout in difficult circumstances. Big shout out to Dawson Harris for playing out of position.

There was a stand out performance from young buck Charlie Davies, in the back row, who was excellent in attack and defence, and was all over the field at times.

Ben Jones also had an excellent game building on his good performances over the last couple of weeks.

The young Bargoed side found it tough going against a Penallta side that contained a lot of former 1st XV players, but will look to bounce back  in the next game on 22 October when they entertain St Peter’s at home.

There was no game for the Youth this week.
