Bargoed Youth Match Report

Bargoed Youth v Blackwood Youth

The Ystrad Mynach Centre of Excellence was the host venue this week for our top of league clash against rivals Blackwood RFC. The promise of a rugby spectacle drew a large crowd that filled the stands showing fantastic support for both sides.

From the kick off Bargoed got straight into their stride and put together some great phases of rugby that put the Blackwood team under numerous spells of pressure.

A penalty for Bargoed allowed them to break the deadlock and go 3 points up thanks to the boot of outside half Charlie Williams.

Straight from the kick off Bargoed were back on the attack, building momentum and settled into a rhythm of well structured play.

Some good phase play put Blackwood under pressure close to their line, with the ball going through numerous hands Bargoed found Corey Ireland, who in typical fashion thundered over for the opening try. The extras where added via the boot of Williams.

Score Bargoed 10 - Blackwood 0

Both teams had opportunities towards the end of the first half but failed to convert any built up pressure into points, meaning going into the sheds at the interval the score remained 10 points to 0 in Bargoed’s favour.

Blackwood started the second half with a bit more eagerness about their game and spent long periods of play deep inside Bargoed territory, Bargoed where able to withstand the Blackwood onslaught, exit their lines and find field position up the other end of the paddock, gaining another kickable penalty. Williams stepped up to the mark and put the ball between the sticks to push Bargoed further into the lead.

Score Bargoed 13 - Blackwood 0

Blackwood now needed to do something to turn the tide in their favour and from restart they did just that. Some good build up play and pressure allowed Blackwood to earn field position inside the Bargoed half and bust the Bargoed defence to go over the whitewash for a well deserved try. With the extras added successfully the score line now stood, Bargoed 13 - Blackwood 7

Bargoed re-grouped and hit straight back,  some excellent rugby skills on show, Bargoed were able to release Winger Jamie Lloyd on the right flank to go over in the corner. The touchline conversion was unsuccessful making the score Bargoed 18 Blackwood 7.

In similar fashion as earlier in the game, Blackwood were not wanting to settle for second best and were straight back on the attack. Blackwood were able to convert this pressure into points and bundled over the Bargoed line. With the extras successfully added the score now sat at Bargoed 18 - Blackwood 14 with less than 10 minutes on the clock to play.

Bargoed had a sense of urgency about them which was prevalent throughout the game, it was clear to see that they did not want to let this game slip away from them at the death.

Through some fantastic defence Bargoed were able to secure the ball and make inroads towards the Blackwood line. This continued pressure built into a Bargoed set piece on the Blackwood 22 meter line. Some direct running from Centre Logan Yendle got Bargoed to 5 meters out from the try line, some intelligent work got the ball to second row Rhys Davies who showed the fantastic skill set of a modern day forward throwing an excellent pass off his left hand to the ever present and reliable Taylor Meades who dived over in the corner at the death. With the touchline extras added this brought the final score and the curtains down on a fantastic game of rugby finishing Bargoed 25 - Blackwood 14.

This was a great spectacle for youth rugby and highlights that the future of the game in the Caerphilly region is looking very strong indeed.
