Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed RFC Match Reports

There were two victories for the 1st XV and Youth this week as both progressed in the cup competitions.

1st XV Match Report

The 1st XV entertained struggling Tata Steel in decent conditions.
The visitors have had a difficult time of late, but they worked hard and were very committed, but in the end Bargoed were too strong.

Bargoed opened the scoring on 7 minutes when centre Daf Carter went over for the first try after a good build up. Steff Jones converted to make it 7-0.

Bargoed were looking to play an expansive game and in the space of 14 minutes they got the ball to Duane Dyer who crossed twice, with Steff Jones again converting both to lead 21-0 with 24 minutes gone.

Prop Aaron Elliott was the next scorer for Bargoed with a try from close range, and they then scored two more tries before half time, one from Matthew Lewis with a searing break, and another from hard running wing Dai Evans. Jones converted two from three and Bargoed led 40-0 at half time.

The second half saw Bargoed score their seventh try when Rhys Thomas went over and Matthew Lewis converted.

The home side made some changes, and one of the replacements Tom Rice was next to score. There was a great break from another replacement Geraint Edmunds, who was back after injury, with a hack and hope kick from the big lock. Josh Prosser came on and kicked the conversion and Bargoed led 54-0.

Tata Steel kept going and managed to apply some pressure in the Bargoed 22 but an error saw Bargoed counter attack with Dai Evans and Josh Prosser prominent before Daf Carter put promising back rower Charlie Davies over with Prosser converting again.

The final score came from another counter attack started by Dai Evans with Charlie Davies going close to a second try, but when he was tackled Bargoed moved the ball for replacement lock Geraint Edmonds to canter over from 15 metres, and with Prosser converting, Bargoed came out on top 68-0.

Big shout out to Tata for travelling up, fulfilling the fixture and not giving in. They are having a difficult time, so huge respect for all your hard work in getting it on. Well done and keep working hard boys.

Youth XV Match Report

The Youth travelled west to Tumble RFC for a National Plate Competition tie. There was great support with a full bus down to the land of the Scarlets, and they all played their part in supporting the boys and making it a successful trip.

The Bargoed squad is looking stronger every week with the boys working hard in training and with more players now available, there is increased depth and great competition for places.

Bargoed came out on top 17-0 against a well organised and talented West Wales outfit.

The game was a great advert for youth rugby with two quality sides going at it, with some great rugby played.

Bargoed scored three tries through Joey Hall, Captain Taylor Meades and his fellow back rower Josh Michaels who also picked up the Man of the Match Award, for an outstanding performance by this versatile player.

Charlie Williams converted one out of three in difficult conditions.

Both the 1st XV and Youth now progress to the next round, and will look forward to the draw this week, to see who they face next.
