Bargoed Briefs

It was a bad weekend in terms of results for Bargoed RFC, but there were some encouraging performances to build on, with all three sides going down to narrow defeats. The Warriors played on Thursday evening up at Dowlais, going down to a well organised outfit 26-19. The Warriors fought back from a 20-0 deficit and showed plenty of character to dig in and get themselves back into the game, but the poor start cost them badly after a run of wins this season.

The Youth Team were in action in Rhymney on Friday night, and put in a great shift against a more experienced home side. Bargoed played some great rugby and can count themselves unlucky not to win this one after leading for the vast majority of the game. In the end they went down 19-15, and nearly pipped the home side with a superb attack from deep. There is more to come from this young group with excellent numbers in training and a willingness to learn.

The 1st XV played at the Arms Park against Cardiff RFC in an early kick off in the Principality Premiership fixture on Saturday, and dominated in terms of territory and possession without getting a win that they deserved. They out scored the home side three tries to two but ended up without even a bonus point in a 30-22 loss. The players will know that a couple of missed opportunities and conceding penalties in key areas was the difference between winning and losing. This was however a very encouraging performance with lots of positives to build on in training this week.

The 1st XV play Bedwas on Saturday with a midday kick off in another Principality Premiership fixture at Bargoed Park. The 2nd XV and Youth are also looking to arrange games this week.

Good to see talented ex Bargoed Back rower Ian Richards at the Arms Park on Saturday supporting the boys. Ian is now living in Cardiff and a follower of the Cardiff Blues these days but on Saturday he was back supporting his old side against Cardiff RFC. Ian was a skilful and intelligent no. 8 in the sides of the late 70's and 80's who selflessly put Malcolm Pratten or Les Hill in for many tries with his skill off the back of the much vaunted Bargoed scrum.
