Bargoed Briefs

The 1st XV were in action at the weekend, and went down narrowly to another frustrating defeat, with visitors Bedwas closing the game out in the last few minutes with a try to clinch it 17-5. The try count was one a piece but again it was the penalty count that made the difference with the visitors converting four penalty kicks into 12 points.

This week the 1st XV head up to visit old foes Ebbw Vale RFC at Eugene Cross Park for another Principality Premiership clash. Bargoed lost out narrowly and late on, a couple of weeks ago against the Steelmen, something that has happened on a no. of occasions this season. The boys are not far away and a couple of wins will surely build confidence, and see them return to winning ways. Kick off is 7.15 p.m. on Friday 25th November, get up there and support the boys.

There was no game for either the Warriors or the Youth last week with both games called off due to the horrendous weather.  Warriors look to retain the Rhondda & East District Cup they have won for the last couple of years on Saturday as they travel to Llantwit Fardre 2.30pm kick off. Youth will be looking to arrange games over the next two weeks weather permitting!!

It was good to see an excellent turnout on Saturday to remember Rhys 'Butters' Jones and celebrate his birthday. Great guy, huge character and sorely missed by all at Bargoed RFC. Happy Birthday butty RIP.

Last Saturday's game against Bedwas was sponsored by MLS Building and Construction, and it was good to see Company Director and ex Bargoed scrum half Leon Stonelake back up at Bargoed Park. Leon's partner Mike Lewis was also in attendance. Mikey is known as the local golfing Bandit up at Whitehall, with his creative card marking skills, and apparently is also the sensible one, and the driving force in the partnership.

Leon captained the Youth team in Bargoed before going on to represent the 1st XV in the mid 90's. He was also joined by a legendary Bargoed tourist in his dad Duncan 'Globetrotter' Stonelake. Legend has it that big Dunc played more games for Bargoed on foreign soil than he did in Wales. If there was a tour his was the first name down on the club notice board to go. He toured with Bargoed to many places including some of the great Trie sur Bais and South Jersey trips, great tourist and he can play a tune as well.

Joining the boys was another ex Bargoed player Daniel Barwood, who toured with Bargoed to South Jersey, Philadelphia, and New York in 2002 with his father in law, yes you guessed it, Big Dunc. Dan was a talented half back, either 9 or 10 and also a very good footballer, and that's why he's known as Rooney (and he's got the same hairstyle). Dan is now the Phil Mitchell of Maesycwmmer as the Head Honcho at the Inn (Emma's actually in charge but Dan likes to think that he is). Good to see you boys glad you had a great day!

There is a band in the club on the 3rd December Tab 80 only £4 a ticket come and enjoy a top band and have a good night.
