Bargoed Briefs
The 1st XV travelled west to Newcastle Emlyn in the WRU Premiership and the Youth were in action in a Dragons Cup semi final against Pontypool Utd. There was no game for the Warriors this week.
1st XV
Bargoed started well enough against Newcastle Emlyn in difficult and heavy conditions but slowly the hosts grew into the game. However it was Bargoed who opened the scoring with a great individual try from Dylan Williams.
The hosts hit back shortly afterwards when the Bargoed defence were caught napping and they scythed through for a converted try and a 7-5 lead.
Bargoed responded and managed to get into the home side’s 22 but they were again caught out when the hosts counter rucked, pinched the ball and run the length of the field to score and lead 12-5 at half time.
The second half saw Newcastle Emlyn have more territorial advantage early in the second half.
They pinned the Bulls down with their kicking game and when Bargoed failed to deal with a chip through the ball went loose and the hosts pounced for a third try which was converted and the hosts led 19-5.
Bargoed struck back after a period of pressure and it was Morgan Edwards that crashed over from close range for a try and closed the gap to 19-10.
Bargoed again created opportunities but a failure to be clinical in the opposition 22 cost them badly, and the hosts took advantage of this to gain a foothold in the Bargoed red zone.
Newcastle Emlyn pressured Bargoed’s defence and scored next after some really poor defence from Bargoed and they increased the lead to 26-10.
The hosts kept Bargoed in their own half with an astute kicking game and kicked a penalty to increase the lead to 29-10.
Bargoed struggled to get out of their 22 and were forced to play from deep. They coughed the ball up with another error and the hosts got their fifth try which was converted and the final score was Newcastle Emlyn 36 Bargoed 10.
This was probably the most inept and ineffective performance from Bargoed for quite a while and there will need to be significant improvement this week as we entertain Mid District rivals Ystrad Rhondda on Saturday in another tough league encounter.
Youth
Bargoed took on Pontypool Utd for the second time this season. It was a much improved performance with Bargoed showing how much they have developed as a team over the last couple of months.
The hosts came out on top but Bargoed ran them close losing 15-8 in a tough encounter. Jay Taylor got the Bargoed try and Cody Jones kicked a penalty.
Captain Cody Rees led from the front with another excellent performance and there were also great contributions from Evan Owen, Max Hill, and Slayde Burchell.
Bargoed also blooded some new talent from the under 16’s in what was a real squad effort.
The coaching staff were pleased with the work rate and effort from the boys with a great shift, and this augurs well for the rest of the season.
Well done to Cody Rees who has been selected for Crawshays Youth to take on Christ College Brecon this week.
He follows in the footsteps of senior squad members Louis Tovey and Wil Gregory who recently represented the senior Crawshays team.
