Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed Briefs

It was three out of three on Saturday with the 1st XV, Warriors and Youth all winning.

1st XV

The 1st XV hosted Mid District rivals Beddau in a National Championship tie in great conditions, and it turned out to be a really entertaining game.

Bargoed had the early pressure with Dai Evans, Rhys Thomas and Steff Jones all looking good with ball in hand, but they conceded a penalty and Beddau relieved the pressure.

The visitors benefitted from a 50-22 kick to gain a foot hold in the Bargoed 22 and a well worked move saw them score out wide and convert to lead 7-0.

Bargoed responded well and excellent work by the forwards with their driving line-out saw the ball moved wide for Duane Dyer to score in the corner. Steff Jones converted to make it 7-7.

Beddau continued to pin Bargoed in their own half with an effective kicking strategy and this paid dividends. The Green and Golds they kicked a penalty and scored a second try from a line-out, close to the Bargoed line with a well worked move to lead 15-7 after 20 minutes.

This spurred Bargoed into action and slowly their scrum started to dominate with Beddau conceding a series of scrum penalties.

Bargoed reduced the lead after a series of drives and as Callum Merrick was illegally prevented from scoring, a penalty try was awarded to make it 15-14.

Bargoed took the lead shortly after with a penalty kick from Captain Steff Jones taking them in at half time 17-15 ahead.

The hosts were first to strike in the second half when from a line-out,  good work from Darren Humphries and James Leadbeater saw the ball moved wide for Rhys Thomas to score, and Bargoed led 22-15.

Bargoed were now stretching the Beddau defence and finding space out wide. This pressure saw Bargoed score again, this time from an effective driving line-out with Ali Gardiner-Key scoring and Steff Jones converting to lead 29-15.

Beddau weren’t finished though and  were very much still in the game. The young Beddau outfit continued to work hard which resulted in Bargoed making some errors and conceding a couple of penalties.

Bargoed made some changes with an experienced bench which included Lewys Lippiett, Daf Carter, Calum Jones, Kieron Brown and young buck Keaton Davies coming on to make an impact.

Bargoed once again used their effective set piece to get into the opposition 22 and scored another try from a driving line-out through hard working back rower Callum Merrick. Josh Prosser converted for the hosts to lead 36-15.

The visitors were not lying down and after a huge amount of pressure near the Bargoed line, they managed to score and reduce the deficit to 36-20 with five minutes to go.

Bargoed responded well though looking hungry to make amends for conceding Kate on. They remained patient and applied pressure and after a series of quick rucks scrum half James Leadbeater sniped and scored, and with Prosser converting Bargoed were victorious 43-20 with a bonus point victory that takes them up to seventh place in the league.

This was a good result against a well organised, resilient and fit young Beddau side, who worked hard all day. Bargoed will be pleased with the result as they look to build towards next week’s encounter with Cardiff Met.

Warriors

The Warriors travelled to Cardiff in a National Athletic East league match against CR Cymry Caerdydd 67’s and came away with a 25-19 victory

The Warriors were poor in the first half lacking some cohesion and made a number of errors, resulting in a lack of go forward, and a poor defensive effort. However the second half saw a big improvement with the bench making a huge impact.

The bench of Harry Thompson, Jack Higgs,  Conor Morgan, Ethan Lott and Niall Alexander as Bargoed’s version of the Bomb Squad were excellent in bringing energy and commitment to the cause.

There were also impressive performances from Kyle Bailey, Dawson Harris and Ben Jones whose defence and kicking game were top class.

The tries came from Zak Marchant, Charlie Davies and Nathan Jones with Ben Jones adding 10 points from the boot with a superb kicking performance.

Youth

The Youth travelled to Newport to take on a physical St.Julian’s / Caerleon team, and came away with a well deserved 37-10 victory

This was a good result for the youth on the road, some wrongs were put right from the last outing in a very competitive game.

Bargoed started well and used their dominant lineout and driving maul well to start the score board ticking over. The host responded well and came back hard, spending long periods of time deep inside the Bargoed half. However, good solid defence allowed Bargoed to take it in to half time without conceding a point.

Straight after half time St.Julians / Caerleon hit back with a well structured move leading to a try in the corner.

This woke Bargoed up, forcing them to move up a gear and take control of the game, in turn keeping the score board ticking over through some well worked scores.

Bargoed eventually ran out comfortable winners in a game which was again, a great advert for youth rugby.

The try scorers were Joey Hall with four tries, Taylor Meades with two and another from Charlie Williams

Charlie Williams also kicked a conversion.

Man of the Match was try scoring hooker Joey Hall with an incredible four tries but there were some fine performances across the team. Well done lads.

The coaching staff of Steve Rose, Greg Callow and Lee Meades were pleased with the performance and result but know there is more to come from this group.

It was good to see Rhys Davies back in action after representing Wales in rugby league recently.
