Bargoed v Nelson Mid District

Bargoed entertained neighbours Nelson in the Quarter Final of the Mid District Cup under the lights in a midweek game at Bargoed Park.

Bargoed selected a young side as part of their player development programme, but there were some more experienced players involved as well. Nelson took a similar approach and it turned out to be an exciting game but there were a lot of errors on a heavy pitch.

Bargoed started well and took an early 12-0 lead with well constructed tries from Jordan Purcell and Rhys Thomas, the latter after a great offload by centre Lewis Cooper. Josh Prosser converted one of the tries.

Bargoed lost a couple of players through injury early on with Aaron Elliott and Luke Cusack leaving the field replaced by the Rhys Morgan and 1st XV debutant Keaton Davies

Bargoed regained the lead on 28 minutes with a try from Ashley Gibson after good work from the forwards, which Prosser converted to make it 19-12.

Bargoed’s discipline was starting to cause them some problems and
they conceded a couple of penalties which allowed Nelson to drive the line-out and Owain Evans got the try which Davies converted to make it all square.

Bargoed continued to infringe and
when Morgan Lloyd’s tackle was adjudged to be high Referee Gareth Davies issued a yellow card on 38 minutes.

Bargoed made some early changes in the second half with Glenn Lucas replacing James Locke. When they returned to having 15 players in the field, they decided to drive a line-out close to the opposition line and hooker Jack Williams scored to make it 24-19.

Nelson continued to work hard and their backs always looked dangerous, but Bargoed’s pack started to get the upper hand in the scrum and contact area.

Bargoed increased their lead when Jordan Purcell counter attacked and beat a number of defenders before releasing pacy centre Lewis Cooper who scored in to make it 29-19.

Both sides made a series of changes as the game entered the last 15 minutes, but Bargoed held out and looked strong at the end as they got the win and move into the semi finals.

Bargoed will be pleased with their attack in scoring five tries but disappointed with the defensive effort in the first half. It was good to see six youth boys make their 1st XV debuts. Well done to Rhys Thomas, Lewis Cooper, Travis Sullivan, Joel Griffiths, Jake Rees and Keaton Davies.

This Saturday the 1st XV travel to Tata Steel. The Warriors face Brecon at home and the Youth play Chepstow away.
