Bargoed Briefs 19th May 2025

Bargoed Briefs

The final week of the season saw Bargoed RFC have two sides playing in finals with the under 15’s playing in the Dragons Cup Final and the Warriors playing in the Division 6 Mid District Final.

It also saw the 1st XV draw the season to a close the previous Saturday with a WRU Premiership tie against Pontypridd.

Premiership

The 1st XV welcomed Pontypridd to Bargoed Park and it was the visitors who started positively scoring two converted tries to lead 14-0 with 18 minutes gone.

Bargoed responded well and started to build real pressure on the visitors defence, and Rheims Handford scored from close range to make it 14-7 after 28 minutes.

Bargoed were now dominating territory and possession, and great sleight of hand from Corey Tucker saw James Leadbeater score, with Josh Prosser converting to make it all square.

Bargoed took the lead after continued pressure with Dylan Williams making the break and skipper James Leadbeater supporting and getting the try with Prosser converting and it was 21-14 to the host at half time.

Bargoed started the second half with confidence and after a patient build up they scored a well constructed try with good work by Dylan Williams creating the bonus point try for Dai Evans. Josh Prosser converted and Bargoed now led 28-14.

The visitors were working hard to break down the Bargoed defence, and they closed the gap with a try. However the Bulls held firm for the remainder of the game and ended up winning 28-19.

The Coaching and Management staff will be pleased with the effort of the players in their first season in the new WRU Premiership with a fourth place finish. However they know that there is more to come from this group, in challenging for the title next season.

Bargoed qualified for the Mid District Cup Final with the victory over Pontypridd but were unable to play due to injuries and unavailability after a tough season.

Warriors

The Warriors reached the Mid District Cup Final with a convincing midweek victory over Glyncoch.

They faced local rival’s Penallta in the final at Sardis Road, Pontypridd after both sides drew recently in a league game.

Bargoed started well but Penallta defended stoically to hold them out in the first 15 minutes. Penallta then had momentum but Bargoed’s defence was excellent against a physical side.

Bargoed opened the scoring with a try from hard working back rower Josh Michaels converted by Charlie Williams.

Bargoed increased the lead with Morgan Powell crossing and Williams converting to make it 14-0

Penallta struck back and forced their way over for a converted try and closed the gap 14-7.

Bargoed got their third try with sharp winger Brad Crossman getting his second and they led 19-7 at half time.

Bargoed increased the lead early in the second half with Morgan Powell scoring his second try and Charlie Williams converted to make it 26-5.

It was a game of contrasting styles with Penallta using their big ball carriers with a forward dominated game plan, whereas Bargoed’s defence were looking to move the ball wide with a more expansive style.

Penallta struck back with a try  after a period of pressure to narrow the lead to 26-12.

Bargoed looked strong though and struck back when the excellent Jason James crossed for a well deserved try converted again by Charlie Williams.

Bargoed were well led by young hooker Joey Hall who had also had an excellent game, alongside all the young talent in the front row.

Morgan Powell collected the Player of the Match award, with two tries and a great display at full back.

The final score was 33-12 in what was a great advert for Mid District rugby.

This was an excellent performance by Bargoed against a more experienced Penallta outfit.

The Warriors now look forward to playing in Division 5 East next season with promotion from a tough Division 6 East Central league last season.

Under 15’s

Bargoed faced Newbridge in the Dragons Cup Final and were leading 19-12 at halftime. However a big and powerful Newbridge outfit clawed their way back into the game and managed to get the win 36-19.

Well done to both sides on an entertaining game of rugby.

Well done to all the players coaches and management teams for your commitment this season.

We would also like to thank our bar and catering staff and thanks all our supporters, parents and our small but hard working committee.

Have a great break, rest up and we go again in season 2025-26
