1st XV Report
Bargoed travelled to Pandy Park to face Cross Keys in another Premiership encounter. Keys are always a thought but to crack, particularly on their home turf.
The hosts had the better of the first ten minutes but Bargoedโs defence was superb and very disciplined.
Bargoed started to get some traction playing with width and created a number of line breaks. However Keys scrambled well to keep them out.
Bargoed looked composed on their ball with half backs James Leadbeater and Will Ford pulling the strings in attack.
Bargoed opened the scoring after 14 minutes with a try from Ashley Norton after a patient build up resulting in a try. Will Ford added the extras and Bargoed led 7-0
The hosts piled the pressure on Bargoed but once again their defence held firm with Rhys Stephens and Will Ford holding the ball op over the line.
Cross Keys finally opened their account with a penalty to close the gap to 7-3.
Bargoed responded well and were causing Keys problems when they played with width, but the hosts defence held firm.
Bargoed conceded a penalty thirty yards out and Cross Keys took advantage of a lapse in defence to score a converted try and lead 10-7.
Bargoed continued to play with ball in hand with the back three of Powell, Williams and Norton all looking dangerous.
Bargoed stretched the Keys defence but they managed to turn the ball over on the stroke of half time.
The visitors looked dangerous early on and were again stretching Keys but good work in defence and the breakdown resulted in the ball being turned over.
Bargoed kept the foot on the pedal though and were awarded a penalty which Will Ford duly converted to bring the game level.
Bargoed were now on top and when Logan Yendle made a break, the hosts conceded another penalty and sharpshooter Ford stepped up to make it 13-10 to Bargoed.
Bargoed were now in the ascendancy and great approach work and patience in the red zone saw Jonny Wright put Ashley Norton away with a great pass for the wing to get his second try. Ford converted and Bargoed increased the lead to 20-10 with 64 minutes gone.
The home side started to build some momentum with their driving line-out, and when Bargoed conceded a penalty Keys kicked it to close the gap to 20-13 with 9 minutes to play.
Bargoed again responded well and pressure applied resulted in another penalty with Ford maintaining his 100% kicking record for the day.
Bargoed closed the game out and will be pleased to get the win, that takes them up to seventh in the league.
