Bargoed Briefs

The 1st XV travelled to play Neath at the Gnoll in a WRU Premiership clash and the Youth were home against South Gower in the WRU Youth Cup Quarter Final.

The Warriors game was sadly cancelled due to Forgeside not being able to field a side.

1st XV Match Report

Bargoed started well and had an opportunity created with Dylan Williams and Ashley Norton out wide, but the home side managed to defend it.

Neath started to get the edge territorially using their powerful maul to pressure Bargoed and penalties were conceded.

Neath were patient in attack and after 20 minutes they opened their account with a converted try after a multi phase attack.

Neath attacked from half way with a chip and chase being regathered and they scored their second try to lead 12-0.

Bargoed responded well and a break from Keegan Bale looked like it would result in a try for Logan Yendle but Neath scrambled well to deny the Bulls.

Bargoed kept the pressure on and Neath conceded a penalty, but a missed line-out let them off the hook.

The Bulls kept coming though and increased the pace of the game with some quick tap penalties. This paid dividends as the Neath defence struggled to keep their line intact.

Bargoed attacked from a scrum and recycled quickly and hard working back rower Rhys Stephens crashed over. Josh Prosser converted and it was 12-7 at half time.

Bargoed gained an early penalty after good work in the contact area by Ashley Norton. They forced another penalty and Morgan Edwards scored a try from close range converted by Josh Prosser.

Bargoed were now starting to get real momentum with good work by Prosser and Dylan Williams in the air, getting Bargoed into the Neath 22.

Bargoed failed to capitalise on the territory and pressure that they were applying. However they rectified this and scored a third try with Morgan Edwards getting his second touchdown after 62 minutes. Prosser converted and Bargoed led 21-12.

Neath tightened the game up again using their effective maul and they created an opportunity but Bargoed scrambled well and diffused the danger.

Matthew Lewis relieved the pressure with an incredible 50-22 from inside his own 22 to lift the side.

Bargoed made some changes and the bench made an impact as they again upped the tempo.

Bargoed were now well on top and pushing for a bonus point. There were two clear opportunities created but the Bulls disappointedly failed to capitalise.

They also conceded a penalty late on that gave Neath a losing bonus point as they kicked the points to make the final score 21-15

This was a great team performance but the back row in particular got through a load of work in the tight and loose.

The Coaching Team will be pleased with the performance and the result, but will be disappointed that Bargoed didn’t convert chances into points that would have turned the screw and given them a bonus point.
