Bargoed v Newcastle Emlyn

Both sides defied the conditions to provide the hardy supporters at Bargoed Park with an entertaining game which saw the home side come away with another bonus point win. But it was not all plain sailing for the Blues and Newcastle Emlyn had the better of the first half hour in terms of territory and possession  but crucially could not break down a resolute Bargoed defence.

Despite the lack of possession the Blues held a 3 point lead from the 7th minute, courtesy of a Matthew Hurley penalty. The first try came just after the half hour, Hurley put a penalty to 30 metres from the West Walians' line, a clean catch in the middle of the line gave the forwards an opportunity to drive and excellent control took them to the line before they were stopped illegally and referee Gwyn Morris went under the posts for a penalty try. Hurley converted and prop Emrys Davies got a yellow card for the offence. Bargoed flanker Lewis Weyman joined him minutes later for a ruck infringement and the half time whistle went with both sides down to 14 but with Bargoed ahead at 10-0.

Bargoed started the second half strongly and extended their lead within 5 minutes of the kick off. Number 8 Ross Coombes came off the back of a scrum on the half way and fed scrum half James Pizey. He slipped a pass to wing Gareth Dare who bounced defenders off before offloading to Ali Gardener - Key and the young prop crossed for a try. Hurley converted.

The third try came just at the end of the third quarter. Bargoed disrupted a Newcastle Emlyn scrum on under their own posts and  Gwyn Morris again penalised the West Walians pack. Quick thinking from hooker Leigh Meades saw him tap and go over from short range and Hurley again added the extras to put the game out of reach at 24-0.

Dan Davies got one back for the away side on 63 minutes but almost immediately Bargoed restored their advantage and with it the bonus point with Lewis Protheroe seizing on a charge down to claim the fourth try. Hurley missed his only kick of the afternoon but Bargoed were 29-5 up.

The final score came just 5 minutes from the end with James Pizey fielding a high kick and running back at the midfield. A brilliant flat pass to centre Darren Humphries took out 2 defenders, he straightened, dummied and scored Bargoed's fifth try. Replacement outside half Niall Martin added a fine touchline conversion against the wind and the Blues ran out winners by 36-5.
