Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed Youth take on local rivals Penallta in a Dragons League fixture at the weekend. The game kicks off at 2.30pm, so get up to Bargoed Park and support the boys.

Bargoed came out on top in an entertaining midweek game under the lights at Ystrad Mynach against Monmouthshire County.

The visitors had players from 14 different clubs who combined to take on the Bulls. The proceeds of the gate were donated to Mind Cymru.

Bargoed had a couple of experienced players but the squad was predominantly made up of youth team products from the last couple of years, including three current youth players Rhys Thomas, Kieron Coulsen, and Kyle Bailey who moved across to the back row with the late withdrawal of Luke Cusack.

The team were led by experienced centre Luke Smalley who did a great job as Captain.

Bargoed started well with two tries inside 20 minutes from Niall Alexander, both converted by Callum Jones to lead 14-0. Alex Edmonds went close after minutes but was bundled into touch as he dived for the corner.

Mon County fought back though and score right on half time with a driving line-out, which was converted for a half time score of 14-7.

Both sides made a few changes and the next 15 minutes was quite an error strewn period. However Bargoed managed to regroup and focus and on the hour Adam Jones increased the lead with a sheep chip and chase effort, Callum Jones converted to make it 21-7.

Ieuan Morgan looked as if he was going to score but got hauled down close to the line.

Bargoed made more changes and increased their lead after a good break by Rhys Thomas with Jack ‘Twin’ Carey scoring in the corner.

Rhys Thomas converted from the touchline and then got Bargoed’s fifth try, which he converted in his senior debut to see Bargoed home 35-7.

The visitors gave a good account of themselves in difficult circumstances but there were some good individual performances.

The score probably slightly flattered Bargoed in the end, but the Bargoed coaching team will be pleased with the effort from the squad.
