Bargoed v Cardiff Met Match Report

Bargoed RFC

Bargoed entertained Cardiff Met on Saturday at Bargoed Park in a National Championship league game with Bargoed in fourth place and The Met in third.

Bargoed had the upper hand early on in terms of possession and territory, and opened the scoring after scrum pressure saw back row man Corrie Thomas crash over.

The Met fought back and got some territory but Bargoed worked hard in defence to keep their line intact.

Bargoed lost wing Dai Evans after 20 mins with an injury and Matthew Lewis replaced him.

The second try was scored after 30 mins when Bargoed attacked through a driving line-out with Lewys Lippiett being tackled close to the line, but he offloaded well for Adam Jones to score, and lead 10-0.

The students started to get some possession and got a foot hold in the hosts 22, which resulted in a converted try to cut the deficit.

They scored again shortly after after a turnover in the Bargoed half saw them crash over for a second try and they took the lead 14-10.

Bargoed responded well and were patient in attack as they carried effectively through the forwards. However it was full back Rhys Thomas who popped up and cut a great line to score, with the conversion from Josh Prosser taking them in 17-14 in front at half time.

Bargoed started the second half with an early score as a driving line-out saw Keegan Bale crash over, converted by Steffan Jones.

The increased the lead to 31-14 when they managed to get the ball wide for replacement Matthew Lewis to score, again converted by Jones.

Cardiff Met didn’t capitulate though and stayed in the game, and they deservedly scored a longe range try to close the gap to 31-19.

Bargoed know how dangerous Cardiff Met are and ensured that they kept the Met attack at bay. They scored their fifth try through live-wire full back Rhys Thomas after good approach work.

Bargoed were now well on top and scored two tries in the last 10 minutes to seal the deal with a scrum penalty try and a well constructed effort from just inside the Met half with second row Grant Rogers scoring a try which was converted by Steff Jones.

The coaching staff will be pleased with the performance and the result with a bonus point win to take Bargoed above Cardiff Met and within sight of Neath with games in hand.

Credit to a young Cardiff Met side who continued to play right until the end with great spirit in a commendable performance.

Bargoed worked hard in defence but they will be particularly pleased with the variety in attack, scoring some great tries, which is due to their hard work in training and testament to the work of the coaching staff in crafting these. I

Bargoed face Bedwas away next on Friday evening in another National Championship clash at the Bridgefield in what should be a great local derby.

Get down there and support the boys
