Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed Briefs

There were three wins on Saturday for the three senior teams. The 1st XV entertained Bonymaen in a WRU Admiral Premiership contest and were victorious winning 66-21.

The Warriors also had a good win against Bridgend Athletic 48-7 in a Division 6 East Central tie.

The Youth were also successful with a 31-22 victory against Abercynon, in a friendly.

1st XV

It was Bonymaen who opened the scoring with a penalty to lead 3-0.

The hosts struck back with a try from player of the match, Jordan Howells converted by Matthew Lewis. However from the kick off an error by Bargoed saw the visitors score and take the lead 8-7.

Bargoed’s poor discipline was causing some concern with a series of penalties awarded against them.

Bargoed slowly started to get on top and their attack was now causing Bonymaen some problems.

Kieron Brown and Dai Evans both scored tries with Matthew Lewis converting one to lead 19-11.

The visitors kicked another penalty to close the gap but The Bulls continued to play with tempo and
got the bonus point try just before half time with hooker Louis Tovey crashing over from short range  with Lewis converting to make it 26-14 at the break.

The second half saw Bargoed strike again when replacement, Josh Prosser got the hosts an attacking opportunity through a great 50-22 kick. Louis Tovey got his second try again from close range and Bargoed increased the lead to 33-14.

Bargoed were on top but it wasn’t easy and were being made to scrap for everything with Bonymaen working hard and contesting strongly at the contact area and set piece.

Bargoed were playing with real tempo now and Lewis Johnson was the beneficiary with a try, converted by Prosser.

The Swansea based outfit were not throwing the towel in though and managed to reduce the lead with a converted try.

Bargoed made some changes and Dylan Williams had an immediate impact going over for a try from a scrum to make it 45-21 to the hosts.

Bargoed continued to attack with ball in hand and when they attacked from deep Dylan Williams was tripped by a Bonymaen player, which resulted in a red card being issued but also a serious injury for the offending player. The game was stopped for about ten minutes so that the injured player could be treated.

The game then continued with nine minutes left on the clock. Good work from Josh Prosser and Jordan Howells put Dylan Williams in space again and he took advantage to cross for his second try, converted by Prosser.

Bargoed attacked from deep again off the kick off against the visitors who were now down to 14 men. Jordan Howells put Rhys Thomas away and he was illegally tackled as he headed for the line and a penalty try was awarded.

Bargoed scored again after good work from Rhys Stephens and Morgan Edwards enabling Dylan Williams to cross wide out for his hat trick. The conversion was successful from Prosser and the final score was 66-21 to the hosts.

The Coaching Staff were delighted with the performance as well as the result, although Bargoed certainly didn’t have it all their own way particularly in the first half.

Bargoed RFC would like to wish the Bonymaen player who was seriously injured a speedy recovery.

Thankfully he was well looked after by the medical staff from both teams, prior to the ambulance attending.

Bargoed now sit in fifth position in the WRU Premiership and next week travel to play league leaders Merthyr.
