Bargoed Briefs

The 1st XV welcomed Llangennech RFC to Bargoed Park in the Quarter Final of the WRU Championship Cup, a week after the game had been postponed.

The visitors had the better start and dominated territory and possession early on. Bargoed struggled to get any attacking opportunities but when one came they were clinical and Ollie Andrews crossed for the try and Josh Prosser converted.

Llangennech continued to dominate territorially but Bargoed’s defence was impressive with great outcomes from multi phase attacks from the West Wales outfit. However, Bargoed were conceding penalties under that pressure and at half time the visitors led 9-7.

The second half saw Bargoed have much more control on the game with increased possession. They started to impose their attacking game on the visitors and after a great build up they put  impressive wing Morgan Powell in at the corner to take the lead 12-9 in a tight encounter.

Bargoed increased that lead to 15-9 with a penalty from Josh Prosser.

The visitors responded well though getting on the front foot but once again  Bargoed’s defence held firm.

Both sides looked to play but it was Bargoed who were more accurate in the third quarter with another well constructed try in the corner for Ollie Andrews to bag his second.

Josh Prosser kicked another penalty and now Bargoed were 23-9 ahead with 10 minutes to play.

Bargoed continued to use their attacking game to good effect. However they came unstuck when Llangennech got an interception which was converted to make it a one score game.

The visitors looked to open up but again Bargoed defended well and held them out for a hard earned 23-16 victory against a well organised and impressive opponents.

The Warriors had an excellent win in the National Conference against Cardiff Met after coming back from 19 points down to win20-19

Openside flanker Luke Cusack paired up with Owen James in the centre and were brilliant together.

Cai Jones pulling the strings from outside half and kicking the winning penalty and permit player Connor Kier from Rhymney was solid in defence at fullback and made some good breaks going forward.

Ethan Lott was busy in the second row and got on the scoresheet twice and prop Jack Higgs who played alongside Ethan in the second row also got on the scoresheet.

Cardiff Met had a penalty to win it in the dying seconds, but missed.

Leon James at Number 8 picked up man of the match for his carries which got us over the gain line on soo many occasions and always took 2 or 3 tacklers to pull him down.

Unbelievable team performance when backs were against the wall and had soo many players playing out of position to come back and win 👏🏻

This weekend sees Hawick Quins make their bi-annual trip to Wales and will play against Bargoed at the Park on Friday afternoon at 4.00 pm. for the Butters Cup.

Bargoed will be looking to retain the cup after winning in Scotland last season. Hawick Quins will have other ideas and will be aiming to take this prestigious and important cup back north of the border.

There will then be a function at Bargoed RFC in the evening, so please come and join us for a great night.
