Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed Briefs

It was another good weekend for the senior teams with three wins

1st XV

Bargoed travelled to take on unbeaten league leaders, Merthyr RFC at the Wern, and what a game it was.

The visitors started strongly with Jordan Howells scoring a try in the first two minutes, which was converted by Josh Prosser.

Bargoed increased their lead when the hosts infringed and Josh Prosser kicked the penalty and Bargoed led 10-0.

The game saw two contrasting styles with the hosts reliant on their big pack and set piece against the more expansive style of Bargoed.

Merthyr’s scrum was a real weapon, but Bargoed’s work rate in attack and defence was resulting in the hosts failing to build any continuity.

Bargoed conceded a couple of penalties and were punished when Merthyr took advantage and used their powerful driving line-out to crash over for a converted try to make it 10-7.

Bargoed created another opportunity with a line break from Jordan Howells but an interception prevented the score. Bargoed were awarded a penalty as they were playing advantage and pushed ahead again with Prosser kicking another penalty to increase the lead to 13-7.

However Bargoed were also conceding penalties and this enabled the home side to kick to the corner and muscle their way to a converted try from another driving line-out. Merthyr took the lead for the first time and it was 14-13 in an entertaining game which could go either way.

Merthyr scored again after Bargoed conceded a scrum penalty and they again used their driving line-out to get their third try which was converted to lead 21-13.

Bargoed scored just before half time with a second try for Jordan Howells, converted by Josh Prosser and at half time the hosts led 21-20.

The second half saw Bargoed lose Dai Evans and his replacement Rhys Thomas, did well to win the ball with a contest in the air, and the visitors got a foothold in the Merthyr half.

Bargoed continued to build their attack and excellent work by the inside backs saw powerful wing, Josh Congrieve score in the corner, with Prosser again converting for Bargoed to lead 27-21.

The Iron men responded well after a series of drives and scored another try from close range, which was converted and Merthyr regained the lead making it 28-27.

The home side were playing down the slope and using their kicking game and power game to good effect and scored again from close range to increase the lead to 35-27 with 63 minutes gone on the clock.

Bargoed made some changes and their next try came from a driving line-out with replacement hooker Louis Tovey crashing over with Prosser converting to close the gap to 34-35.

Merthyr looked like they would score again with a line-out in the Bargoed half but a great steal by Keaton Davies enabled Bargoed to clear their lines.

The Bulls were working hard in defence but Merthyr were pressing for the final try. Bargoed managed to turn the ball over and a great kick and chase from Rhys Thomas got Bargoed into the opposition half.

Merthyr tried to clear their lines and a charge down by Owain Cooper and good work from Keaton Davies and James Leadbeater saw Josh Congrieve take his opportunity and crash over for his second try to lead 39-35.
Bargoed cleared their lines from the kick off and got the win in a superb advert for Community Premiership
 rugby.

This was a hard fought victory where Bargoed’s bench really made an impact but the whole team worked incredibly hard against a big and uncompromising Merthyr side.

Bargoed move up to fourth place in the league behind Pontypridd, Neath and Merthyr.

Bargoed now look forward to taking on Pontypridd in the Community Premiership Cup Quarter Final at Bargoed Park.

Warriors

The Warriors travelled to Tondu for a Division 6 East Central tie, and in another entertaining game it was the visitors who came out on top winning 30-12

There were tries for Adam Jones x 2, Glenn Lucas, Sean Morris, Luke Ellaway, and a penalty and conversion from Charlie Williams.
Bargoed remain top of the league and next week is a bye week.

Tondu RFC awarded Aaron Elliott the Bargoed RFC Player of the Match.

Forwards Man of the Match - Josh Michaels
Backs Man of the Match - Owen James

Bargoed would like to thank Tondu for their great hospitality after the game.

Youth

The Youth travelled to play Oakdale and came away with a narrow abdomen hard fought 19-14 victory.
