Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed Briefs

Cup weekend saw both the 1st XV and the Warriors head south to play in Cardiff. The 1st XV travelled to play Cardiff Met in the WRU Premiership Cup and the Warriors faced Rumney in the Division 5 Cup

1st XV

Bargoed visited Cardiff Met after a draw at the same venue the previous week in the league.

Bargoed made a number of changes and this saw debuts for second row Luke Fleming-Jones and back rower Rhiems Handford.

The game was tight early on with both sides trying to play expansively but a combination of good defence and attacking errors saw the first twenty minutes scoreless.

Cardiff Met opened the scoring with a penalty kick to lead 3-0 before Bargoed responded with a try from Louis Jones from close range. Matthew Lewis kicked the conversion and the visitors led 7-3.

Bargoed scored again through Lewis Johnson after good work by Keaton Davies, and with Lewis also kicking this conversion Bargoed increased the lead to 14-3.

Bargoed had the upper hand and Lewis added to his tally with a drop goal. Bargoed kept pressing but good defence held them out and at half time The Bulls led 17-3.

The second half saw Cardiff Met score an early converted try to close the gap to 17-10.

The students scored again shortly afterwards with another converted try and it was all square at 17-17.

Bargoed were struggling to break down a well organised and physical defence but after a period of pressure Matthew Lewis kicked a penalty to lead 20-17.

Cardiff Met struck back in another great game for the neutral and kicked two penalties to lead 23-20.

Bargoed started to get some territory and patiently kept ball in hand with the back three of Dylan Williams, Rhys Thomas and Josh Congrieve all looking dangerous.

Bargoed focussed on ball retention and waited for an opportunity, and after a series of drives with Calum Jones prominent after coming in as a replacement, it was fellow centre Jordan Howells who scored the clincher with a try from close range. The try was converted by Lewis to get the win 27-23 in a tight battle.

The Coaches will be pleased with the victory with a number of changes to the line up. The work rate and desire from the team was again outstanding against a young, big and physical side, who will cause some problems in the Premiership this season.

Warriors

The Warriors will be disappointed with their performance going down away from home to Rumney 39-12 in the National Division 5 Cup.

This week the 1st XV are home against Bonymaen in the league and the Warriors are also home and they entertain Bridgend Athletic also in a league game.
