Bargoed Briefs

1st XV Match Report

Bargoed entertained Cross Keys in a WRU Premiership game at Bargoed Park.

Bargoed started well but failed to convert pressure into points and it was Cross Keys who opened the scoring with a converted try after 14 minutes.

Bargoed worked their way into the Keys 22 but again they turned the ball over. However a few minutes later Bargoed got on the scoreboard with a well crafted try from Lawson Perry converted by Josh Prosser.

Cross Keys regained the lead when Bargoed were penalised at a maul and they kicked the penalty to lead 10-7 after 26 minutes.

There were two contrasting styles with Keys using their big pack to good effect at the set piece and Bargoed looking to play more expansively.

Bargoed again had an opportunity to score with a line-out in the Keys 22 but a lack of accuracy saw the ball turned over and the visitors cleared their lines to lead 10-7 at the break.

The second half saw the visitors have more territory and possession early on but Bargoed took the lead after a great counter attack that saw Dylan Williams score and Josh Prosser converted to lead 14-10 after 51 minutes.

Cross Keys hit back using their driving maul to good effect to score their second try which was converted and lead 17-14 with 20 minutes to go.

Bargoed were now dominating territory and on the attack. They had a couple of opportunities in the Keys 22 but a lack of accuracy again cost the Bulls.

Bargoed started to get the edge at scrum time and with the Keys retreating they moved the ball and speculatively chipped over the Bargoed defence and regathered to score in the corner to lead 22-14 after 73 minutes.

The visitors had a series of penalties awarded against them as Bargoed applied the pressure, and Sean Morris crashed over from close range to get Bargoed’s third try.

Prosser converted with the last play of the game but Bargoed fell short with the most narrow of margins and Keys were victorious 22-21.

Bargoed remain in fourth place with no game next week and the next one up, is a tie down west against Newcastle Emlyn on 30 November

Warriors

The Warriors travelled to Cardiff to take on Rumney in a Division 6 East Central tie. This was another tough task on the road against a well organised outfit.

Bargoed came away with a 31-26 victory with tries from promising hooker Joey Hall who picked up two tries and a try for hard working back rower Callum Merrick. Charlie Williams added the extras with the boot in another assured performance.

This young side are adapting well with many just out of youth rugby, alongside some more experienced campaigners, and the hard work being put in by Coaches Phil Osborne and Lewis Protheroe are paying dividends.

They currently sit in second place in the league behind Cardiff Met Athletic.

Youth

Bargoed travelled to Abercarn to take on Aber Youth under the lights on a  Friday evening in a friendly with no league action this weekend.

Bargoed came out on top
26-12 in an entertaining game with both sides looking to play some expansive rugby.

There were two tries for Tyler Rees, and tries for James Lawrence and Harvey Williams with Jayden Griffiths accurate with the boot kicking three of four conversions.

Back of the Match was Aiden Carter and Forward of the Match was Tyler Rees.

Well done boys.

Mid District Selection

Both Adam Jones and Josh Mayne have been selected in the Mid District squad for the game against Monmouthshire County on Wednesday 20 November at Blackwood RFC. Congratulations boys!!
