Bargoed Briefs

1st XV

The 1st XV travelled to Cardiff to face St Peter’s in a National Championship East fixture with an early try from Morgan Powell and a conversion from Josh Prosser into the lead.

Bargoed lost skipper James Leadbeater with an injury and the backs had a reshuffle.

Bargoed looked to be in control
early on as they increased the lead when Lewis Robey scored a try to make it 12-0.

Bargoed were on top at scrum time with Josh Parry in great form alongside Morgan Edwards and the more experienced Kieron Brown.

Jordan Howells scored next for Bargoed and they led 19-0 when St Peter’s struck back with a try to close the gap to 19-5.

The Rocks weren’t going to lie down and deservedly got their second try for Bargoed to lead 19-12 at half time.

The second half started with Bargoed applying some pressure which resulted in a penalty that was converted by Josh Prosser to increase the lead 22-12.

St Peter’s also kicked a penalty before Jordan Howells, who had looked a threat with ball in hand got his second try, converted by Prosser to lead 29-15.

St Peter’s struck back again with a converted try to close the gap to 29-22.

St Peter’s kicked another penalty to stay in the game and make it 25-22.

Bargoed had picked up a couple of injuries, and Kyle Bailey was then given a yellow card, so Bargoed had to dig deep and a chip and chase effort saw Keegan Bale score with Prosser converting.

The Rocks were not finished though and they crafted a lovely try which was converted, with Bargoed coming out on top
In a real tough battle 36-34.

Bargoed Warriors

The Warriors travelled to play Division 3 Table toppers Abercarn RFC, playing their first game in six weeks, which meant that they were a little disjointed at times.

It was also great to see Dawson Harris back in action after his travels down under.

The Warriors battled hard against Abercarn and were 17-7 down at half time. The second half saw a confident Abercarn take their opportunities and come out on top 31-7 after a tough second half.

Aaron Elliott got the Warriors try and Cai Jones kicked the conversion.

The Youth played Llandaff RFC at Cardiff Arms Park in the WRU Plate Final.

Bargoed got off to a great start with an early try from Harvey Jones sniping from short range. Bargoed scored again minutes later when an error by Llandaff saw the Young Bulls increase the lead with Charlie Williams punching for the try and converting it for Bargoed to lead 12-0.

Llandaff struck back after a period of pressure and crashed over with a converted try to make it 12-7 in this fast paced and highly competitive game.

The Cardiff based side scored again shortly after and drew level at 12-12 in a high tempo game with both sides looking to attack at every opportunity.

Bargoed managed to get into the opposition 22 and were clinical when they got their opportunity with skipper Taylor Meades crashing over for a try to snatch the lead back 17-12.

However, Bargoed didn’t retain the lead for long as Llandaff scored again and converted their try to lead 19-17.

In an absolute humdinger of a game the lead changed hands again as Harvey Jones crossed for his second try and at half time Bargoed were leading 24-19.

The Young Bulls started the second half well, and Morgan Bell crossed for a try and Charlie Williams converted to make it 31-19 with Bargoed appearing to be in command.

Llandaff showed great resolve to stay in the fight and scored again to close the gap to 31-24.

They closed the gap again with a penalty and the game was clearly going to go down to the wire.

Bargoed were outstanding with their relentless work rate in attack and defence a key factor as the momentum swung from side to side.

The Cardiff side conceded a penalty and Charlie Williams coolly slotted it for Bargoed to lead 34-27 and it being anyone’s game as we entered the last five minutes.

Bargoed managed to get into position deep in the opposition half and continued to press for the  try that would close the game out.

The ball was moved to Logan Yendle who deservedly scored a try converted by Charlie Williams to make the final score 41-27 with Bargoed finally getting to the final after the heartbreak of defeat in the semi-final at Resolven RFC the previous season against Burry Port.

This will no doubt be one of the most entertaining games played on Cardiff Arms Park this season, with two clubs battling hard but also taking every opportunity to play an expansive game. They are both a credit to Youth Rugby and  a great advert for the game in Wales.

The Player of the Match was awarded jointly to Harvey Jones and Taylor Meades, although this was a real squad effort with everyone playing their part.

Well done to everyone involved and we look forward to the final at the Principality Stadium on Good Friday 29 March.
