Bargoed Briefs
Bargoed entertained Newbridge in a WRU Premiership tie at a windy Bargoed Park.
The Bulls started well and scored a try after 6 minutes after some great work from Rhys Stephens and Calum Jones got them into the Newbridge 22. It looked like Adam Jones would score but he was tackled short. Bargoed recycled and Louis Jones crashed over with Josh Prosser converting.
Bargoed continued to have dominance in terms of territory and possession, and after a patient build up centre Jordan Howells cut a great line to breach the visitors defence. He was hauled down short of the line, but Bargoed quickly recycled and Rhys Stephens crashed over from close range.
Josh Prosser kicked the conversion and Bargoed were 14-0 ahead.
Newbridge struck back when pressure at scrum time saw the ball go loose and the Bulls conceded a penalty. The visitors kicked to the corner and drove the line out to close the gap to 14-7.
Bargoed continued to stick to their attacking principles and stretched the visitors a number of times but good scramble defence held them.
Bargoed kept battering away and looked like they would score from a driving maul but again Newbridge managed to repel the attack.
Bargoed’s pressure was starting to result in Newbridge conceding a few penalties. Bargoed kicked to the corner and after a series of drives Louis Jones scored his second try, and Prosser converted. The hosts led 21-7 at half time.
Newbridge had the upper hand early on in the second half but the work rate, commitment and physicality of the defensive sets saw Bargoed hold the line and eventually get into the Newbridge half.
Bargoed kept the pressure on with a series of close range attacks, and it was Morgan Edwards who got the bonus point try and Bargoed led 26-7.
Both sides made some changes and Newbridge were now dominating territory and possession. However once again Bargoed’s defence held them out after a number of close range attacks.
The visitors continued to apply pressure and after 65 minutes they got a converted try to close the gap to 26-14.
The game was opening up with opportunities for both sides but the difficult conditions also saw some handling errors.
Bargoed didn’t convert the pressure that they had in the last quarter and Newbridge took advantage but once again Bargoed’s defence held firm, to come away with a 26-14 victory against tough opponents.
The Coaching and Management Team will be pleased with a victory against a side who are always a tough nut to crack. There were many pleasing improvements in a number of areas that should give the players confidence moving forward.
There are no games over Xmas and the 1st XV currently sit in fifth place in the WRU Premiership league.
The next game for them is a trip to Llanegennech, in what will be another tough game to open up the New Year.
The Warriors sit proudly at the top of the Division 6 East Central leagut with Cardiff Met and Brecon Athletic close behind. They face Tondu Athletic on 4 January as they look to push on, challenge for the title and gain promotion.
Best wishes to all involved with Bargoed Rugby as we enter the Xmas and New Year period. Thanks to you all for your hard work and support, with plenty of good rugby and great experiences to look forward to in the New Year, whether at senior, youth or mini and junior level.
