Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed Briefs

The 1st XV game at Bargoed Park was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. However both the Youth and the Warriors were in action.

The Youth faced Pontypool Utd and lost 29-7 against a well organised and powerful outfit, who were stacked with regional age grade players.

Bargoed will rue a couple of mistakes that resulted in three tries for the visitors.

Bargoed’s try came from a penalty try, after an excellent build up in attack.

There were some excellent performances from Carter Stephens, Evan Owen, Cody Jones and Tomi Shutt. Man of the match was Brandon McCarthy.

This young side will learn quickly from this experience and keep working hard as they’ve done all preseason.

The Warriors travelled to take on Division 4 side RTB Ebbw Vale who were coached by two ex Bargoed players and great rugby men in Nicky Coughlin and Robbie Young.

The Warriors were led by Dylan Rogers with a great blend of youth and experience with three 18 year olds in the side and a couple of over 30’s who all played superbly in a great team effort.

RTB dominated territory and possession in the first 15 minutes but great defence from Bargoed kept them out.

The visitors started to get some ball and looked dangerous in attack with Zak Marchetti, Adam Jones and Morgan Powell all  looking dangerous with ball in hand.

They had a great platform to play off with an impressive scrum led by the front row young guns, Kyle Bailey, Joey Hall and Arryn Palmer.

There were first half tries for Aaron Elliott who was excellent and all day, and hard working youngster Josh Mayne, converted by another great prospect in Charlie Williams. Bargoed led 14-0 at the break.

The second half saw Bargoed lift the tempo and all the hard work in pre-season started to pay off with an impressive attacking display. There were some excellent tries scored by Luke Ellaway, Owen James, Greg Callow, Rhys Thomas and Callum Merrick. Charlie Williams also added five conversions in an excellent display.

Coaches Phil Osborne and Steve Lewis were delighted by the performance and it augurs well as the Warriors now enter the National leagues as Bargoed Athletic and host Rumney in their first league game.

The 1st XV travel to Sardis Road to take on Pontypridd in their first game in the new Community Premiership.

The Youth travel the short distance to play local rivals Blackwood.
