Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed Briefs

It’s been a difficult week at Bargoed RFC with the death of popular ex club captain and valued committee member, Jeff Evans. One of the nicest people you could ever meet, Jeff was also a talented player and a keen supporter and a great analyst of the game.

Jeff would be proud of what’s going on at Bargoed RFC at present, in seeing both the 1st XV and the Youth in finals at the Principality Stadium, and the Warriors in the semi final of the cup with lots to play for, with the business end of the season upon us.

He would also be beaming with pride seeing Bargoed Youth win the Dragons Plate semi final against Newbridge at Llanhilleth RFC on Friday night and getting into their second final of the season.

The Young Bulls showed great resilience and character to bounce back after the disappointment of the loss in the WRU Plate Final at the stadium against Carmarthen Athletic.

In difficult conditions at Llanhilleth they came away with a 26-12 victory with tries from Logan Yendle (2), Cai Barnard and Joey Hall. Charlie Williams added the extras from the boot.

The joint Player of the Match was hard running and try scoring centre Cai Barnard and Cody Rees who put in a great shift in the back row.

Well done to all the players, coaches and management, and good luck in the final. Date TBC

The Warriors game against RTB Ebbw Vale disappointedly fell foul of the weather with a waterlogged pitch.

All eyes now are on the 1st XV and the WRU Championship Final on Sunday. Bargoed will be looking to win the cup after cruelly losing out two years ago against Neath .

We face an Ystrad Rhondda side who beat us earlier this season before we levelled it up with a win in December. We know it’s going to be tough and it should be a great game with two evenly matched sides.

Bargoed opened their account in the cup with a narrow win at Cross Keys, and followed this up with hard fought victories over Newbridge, Llangennech and Bedwas.

Ystrad were cup finalists last season and pushed eventual winners Pontypool all the way, losing 28-16 so they will also be desperate to make amends.

Well done to the players, coaches and management staff at Bargoed in getting there, but that’s not enough, we want the cup. Best of luck boys, we’re all behind you.
