Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed Briefs

It was a mixed bag on the weekend with the 1st XV having a 27-27 draw, the Warriors going down to a narrow defeat and the Youth victorious.

Premiership 1st XV

The 1st XV travelled to play Cardiff Met at Cyncoed. Both sides had clear intent to play attacking rugby, from the start, but it was the students who struck first with a converted try after a handling error from the Bulls.

Bargoed started to get some go forward and got themselves into the Met 22 but a lack of accuracy cost them on a couple of occasions.

Cardiff Met were denied a try with a great try saving tackle from Tom Bainton, but shortly afterwards another penalty was conceded which the Met kicked to lead 10-0.

Bargoed were starting to get some reward at scrum time and the line-out improved as the game went on. This enabled them to launch their attack and the Met conceded a couple of penalties. Josh Prosser punished them with two successful kicks to make it 10-6 at half time.

The second half saw Bargoed scoring two tries in the first five minutes, applying pressure early on which resulted in Kieron Brown scoring a try converted by Prosser and it was 13-10 to Bargoed.

Bargoed continued in the same vein and great line-speed and work in defence saw Jordan Howells score after intercepting a pass with Prosser converting and Bargoed leading 20-10.

The Met managed to get into the Bargoed half and another penalty was conceded by Bargoed which the  hosts converted to close the gap to 20-13.

Bargoed were now dominating territory and possession with their set piece on top, and it was replacement hooker Louis Tovey who got the next try from a driving line-out, again converted by Prosser, as Bargoed lead 27-13.

Cardiff Met responded well and with 15 minutes to go they started to get parity at scrum time and had the majority of territorial advantage.

Bargoed conceded a series of penalties and a yellow card was issued. The hosts took advantage of this and scored a converted try from a tap penalty.

The Met continued to apply pressure on 14 man Bargoed and managed to get a foothold in the visitors 22.

Bargoed defended superbly and managed to get the ball back but crucially failed to clear their lines.

The hosts continued to pound at the Bargoed line and the Bulls conceded another yellow card. They continued to defend heroically with 13 players but the Met managed to score a converted try with the last play of the game, and get a draw 27-27 in an entertaining game for the neutral.

The Coaching Staff will again be pleased with the effort and work rate but poor discipline and decision making in the last 15 minutes added to a lack of accuracy in attack at times cost them the victory.

Warriors -Division 6 East Central

The Warriors travelled the short distance to Ystrad Mynach to play Penallta RFC in a league game and a local derby.

The Bargoed young guns played well against a more experienced home side and cruelly lost out 38-36 in an entertaining game and winning the try count 5-4.

There was a try double for the impressive Adam Jones, and tries for Joey Hall, Joel Griffiths and back rower Jason James. Charlie Williams was again in great form with ball in hand, and his kicking game with an 11 point haul with the boot.

Youth

The Youth entertained Risca in a Dragons League game at home and came away with a convincing 39-14 victory.

There were tries for Connor Llewelyn, Cody Rees, Morgan Mazzorelli, Max Hill, Jayden Moon and Shae Jones with Brayden George and Jayden Griffiths with the extras from the boot.

Jayden Moon was selected as Back of the Match and Connor Llewelyn as Forward of the Match.

It was good to see Morgan Meades back in action after a spell on the sidelines through injury.

This week the 1st XV visit Cyncoed again to take on Cardiff Met in the Community Premiership Cup.

The Warriors travel to play Rumney in Cardiff in the Division 6 Cup.

The Youth entertain Cwmbran at home in another Dragons League fixture.

Come along and support all three teams!!
