Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed Briefs

It was a disappointing weekend for Bargoed RFC with three defeats on Saturday.

The 1st XV entertained Pontypool
in a National Championship encounter which was once again a titanic battle. Bargoed started well and led 14-0 with tries from Wade Langley and Dai Evans with Steff Jones getting the extras.

Bargoed dominated territory and possession but missed a couple of opportunities to increase their lead. However it was Pontypool who scored next and they managed to reduce the lead with a Deon Smith try before half time as Bargoed led 14-5 at the break.

The second  half started with Bargoed in the ascendancy but it was Pontypool who scored next to make it 14-12 when Ashley Sweet crashed over with Jarvis adding the extras.

Bargoed had plenty of opportunities but failed to capitalise and a third try for the visitors came from Sam Scarfe to increase the lead to 19-14.

Bargoed continued to pound away at Pontypool and this pressure resulted in Scott Matthews getting a yellow card. It looked like the home side’s territorial dominance would result in a try, but it was the visitors who scored again.

It was Joel Mahoney who crossed to take the game from Bargoed’s grasp and seal the win with a bonus point try.

Final score Bargoed 14 Pontypool 26

The Warriors were defeated 22-11 at home against Aberdare in an Ivor Williams Cup loss. Try scorer Calum Jones & 2 conversions by Ben Jones.

The Youth went down to another two  point defeat this time against Ebbw Vale.
