Bargoed Briefs
Bargoed RFC had a double header against Brecon on Saturday with the 1st XV’s meeting at Bargoed Park in a WRU Premiership match and the Warriors travelling to Brecon to take on Brecon Athletic in a Division 6 East Central top of the table clash.
1st XV
Bargoed started well and went close early on but then took the lead after stretching the Brecon defence for Rhys Thomas to score a try in the corner.
Bargoed then had a period of pressure from the visitors but their defence held firm and Rhys Thomas intercepted in his own half and galloped over for his second try and Bargoed led 10-0.
Brecon continued to have the majority of territory and possession but Bargoed’s defensive effort was excellent. However a lapse in concentration in a broken field situation resulted in a converted try and it was 10-7 to Bargoed at the break.
The second half saw Bargoed ahead in the territorial stakes and as Brecon looked to attack from deep Matthew Lewis intercepted a pass and scored with Prosser converting, to increase the lead to 17-7.
Bargoed made some changes and the bench made an impact and it was the home side that got the boys point with a great try that was crafted superbly and enabled Ashley Norton to take advantage and score a try which was converted by Prosser.
Both sides showed great ambition in attack in a really entertaining game, and it was Brecon who scored a converted try next to narrow the lead to 24-14.
The hosts responded well and good work from Morgan Edwards and Matthew Lewis saw Rhys Thomas get his hat trick with Josh Prosser converting as Bargoed came out on top 31-14 in a tough and physical encounter, but with both sides intent on playing expansive rugby.
Rhys Thomas picked up the Player of the Match Award.
Warriors
The Warriors knew that this would be a tough encounter and it was the Warriors first win in Brecon for a few years.
The Young Warriors outfit worked hard on both sides of the ball in this top of the table clash in a low scoring but exciting game, coming out on top 11-10. Two pens from the boot of Charlie Williams and the winning try came from Dylan Rogers. Man of the match went to Joey Hall.
This week the 1st XV travel to Neath RFC in another tough WRU Premiership tie.
The Warriors entertain St Peter’s RFC in a Division 6 East Central encounter at home.
The Youth travel to face Pontypool Utd in a Welsh Cup game with a 2.00pm kick off
