Paul Daves

Paul Davies

Bargoed RFC are deeply saddened that Paul Davies has passed away. Paul was an ex player and a loyal and committed supporter for many years at Bargoed RFC with many of his family also being involved at the club.

Paul was one of the founding players of the Pirates  Wheelchair rugby side. He competed in club tournaments in Belgium, Holland & Switzerland. He also played a season for the Spartans.

He provided great leadership and he and others in 1996 set up the Welsh Wheelchair Rugby Association.

He also contributed hugely to the Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby Association, he served as both Secretary & Treasurer.

Paul retired as a player and in 1997 became the GB Wheelchair Rugby Team Manager, retiring after he had taken the team to the Sydney Paralympics in 2000. He was instrumental in getting the World Class Performance Plan funding for the GB team in the run up to Sydney.

In 2001 he was instrumental in setting up the GB Development Squad and was the squad Manager from 2001-2003.

He was awarded an MBE in 2011 for his services to Wheelchair Rugby and to other Army Veterans and injured rugby players.

Our condolences to all Paul’s family. We have lost a true rugby legend.
