Bargoed Briefs

1st XV and Youth

The 1st XV travelled to play Mid District rivals Ystrad Rhondda on Saturday in a National Championship tie and Mid District Cup semi-final.

Bargoed rung the changes with Dylan Williams, Duane Dyer, Steffan Jones, Josh Prosser and James Leadbeater returning to the starting line up along with Ali Gardiner-Key, Lewys Lippiett, Lewis Johnson and Callum Merrick up front.

Bargoed started well in wet and difficult conditions and dominated territory early on.

However a lack of accuracy close to the line combined with good defence from Ystrad saw them fail to get over the line. They did take the lead though with a drop goal from Steff Jones.

Ystrad hit back with a drop goal to make it 3-3 and when Bargoed conceded a penalty shortly after it was converted from 35 yards, for the hosts to lead 6-3

Bargoed’s James Locke had a yellow card with 32 minutes gone and the momentum was definitely with the hosts as we neared half time.

The hosts increased that lead a short time later when they intercepted and scored a converted try to lead 10-3.

Bargoed showed great character to get themselves back in the game before half time with a try from James Leadbeater and conversion from Steff Jones to make it 13-10 to the hosts at the break.

Bargoed scored first in the second half with a try from a driving line-out by Lewys Lippiett, converted by Steff Jones to lead 17-13.

Bargoed were under pressure and struggling to get out of their own half and when Ystrad counter attacked from a Bargoed kick they moved the ball wide and scored in the corner to wrestle the lead back to 18-17.

Ystrad increased their lead when Bargoed were penalised for a high tackle and they kicked the penalty to make it 21-17 after 60 minutes.

Bargoed worked hard in defence as Ystrad looked to increase the lead but they defended well and then managed to get a foothold in the hosts 22.

Bargoed dominated the last 10 minutes but they failed to ground the ball on two occasions, which saw the hosts survive a real onslaught and come out in top 21-17.

The Youth entertained Cwmbran in a Dragons League match on Saturday and came out on top.

The Youth ended a successful season when they took on Canadian touring team, Newfoundland Rocks on Wednesday evening and came out on top again with a 31-14 victory with tries from Jacob Ball, Rhys Davies, Dylan Rogers, Aaryn Palmer and Charlie Williams, with Williams also kicking three conversions.

On Saturday the 1st XV welcome Glamorgan Wanderers to Bargoed Park in the final league game of the season.

The Warriors are also at home and entertain Bedwas in a friendly, and will look to include some of the 18 year old Youth boys in the squad, as part of their transition into senior rugby.

Congratulations to Logan Yendle on his selection for Crawshays Youth on the weekend.
