Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed Briefs

It was a good weekend for the 1st XV and the Youth who won in the league and cup but disappointment for the Warriors with the game off against Nelson.

The 1st XV welcomed local rivals Newbridge RFC to Bargoed Park for a National Championship league match. Newbridge had won the reverse fixture at home but Bargoed had won the cup match so it was all square going into this one.

Bargoed were on the attack early but the visitors turned the ball over and got into the Bargoed 22 resulting in the hosts conceding a penalty, which was converted to give Newbridge the lead 3-0.

Bargoed dominated territory and possession in the early exchanges but they lacked a clinical edge and the visitors turned the ball over again and they failed to capitalise on the opportunities that were created. There was another chance missed, before good work saw Ashley Norton cross for a try wide out after 20 minutes and give Bargoed a narrow 5-3 lead.

Bargoed continued to apply pressure and another chance went missing when it looked like Dai Evans was due to cross the try line. However they did keep the pressure on, and shortly after they were held up over the line.

Bargoed did increase the lead before half time when a penalty was awarded. Quick thinking and great vision from Josh Prosser enabled Ashley Norton to get his second try and lead 10-3 at the break.

The Bulls started the second half by scoring early with Prosser and Norton combining to put Dai Evans in and with Prosser converting the home side led 17-3.

Bargoed continued to look to play expansively and continued to stretch Newbridge in tough conditions. They got the bonus point try after some good work by Morgan Thomas and Matthew Lewis, displaying great skills in offloading in contact. This lead to a try double for Dai Evans. Bargoed’s approach was paying dividends with the wings dominating the scoring.

Newbridge continued to battle but the Bulls defence held firm. Indeed it was the hosts who held the ascendancy late in the game with Geraint Edmonds deservedly crashing over after some great carrying work from Kieron Brown, to close the game out with Bargoed victorious 27-3.

Big thanks to all the Bargoed RFC Forkers who volunteered to assist in getting the pitch in a playable condition on Saturday. Thanks for all your hard work and a big thanks to the volunteers who do so much for our club week in week out.

Finally thanks to the man in the middle, Referee Elgan Williams who did a great job officiating in extremely difficult conditions.

The Youth played Ebbw Vale Youth in the Quarter Final of the WRU Plate competition at Islwyn High School, and came away with an impressive 32-16 victory.

There was a try double in this game as well from Josh Mayne, and tries for Taylor Meades and Brandon McCarthy, with Charlie Williams adding the extras from the boot.

This was a great performance from the Young Bulls who worked hard to get the victory in the second half after it being a one score game at half time.

Player of the Match was jointly awarded to Logan Yendle and Josh Mayne.

Well done to the Coaching and Management staff for all their hard work in preparing the boys.

Bargoed now face Llandaff in the semi final next week at a venue to be confirmed.
