Bargoed Briefs

The 1st XV entertained local rivals Penallta in a WRU National Championship East tie at Bargoed Park.

Bargoed had the upper hand territorially early on but excellent defence from Penallta held them out. The hosts continued to probe for the opening score and a great counter attack from Dylan Williams and good work from James Locke saw Dai Evans cross for a try converted by Josh Prosser.

Penallta started to put some phases together and pressure Bargoed in their half, and this resulted in Joseph Scrivens kicking a 50 metre penalty to close the gap to 7-3.

Bargoed struck back with an excellent attack with Calum Jones and Ashley Norton prominent but James Leadbeater was hauled down and the visitors got a penalty shortly after to alleviate the pressure.

This was a common theme in the first half as the visitors caused Bargoed serious problems in the battle of the breakdown.

Both sides had yellow cards issued and at half time Bargoed held a slender 7-3 lead.

Bargoed started the second half with a bang as early pressure saw Morgan Edwards crash over for a try and Josh Prosser added the extras to make it 14-3.

The pressure that Bargoed were applying saw a number of penalties conceded by Penallta who had another yellow card.

Bargoed increased the lead on 58 mins with Ashley Norton scoring wide out after a quick tap and Prosser again converted to make it 21-3.

Penallta fought back and got a foot hold in the Bargoed half and were putting huge pressure on the Bargoed scrum. However the hosts defended well and were awarded a penalty.

Bargoed played off the line out with Lewis Robey making great ground with an effective carry before passing to Matthew Lewis for him to score, and Prosser converted to make it 28-3.

Bargoed scored again after a patient build up from their own half and the ball was moved wide to Ashley Norton in space after good work from Dylan Williams, and Norton cantered over for his second try, which was converted by Prosser.

Bargoed launched one final attack and it looked as though Keegan Bale may have scored but he was held up and the final whistle blew with Bargoed victorious in a tough battle 35-3.

The Warriors entertained Beddau at home in a high intensity encounter with the visitors coming out on top 49-31.

The Youth travelled to Newport and lost to St Julians/ Caerleon 17-10.

Next up for the 1st XV is Treorchy at home in another National Championship East game on Wednesday 1 May at Bargoed Park kick off at 7.30 pm.
