Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed Briefs

The 1st XV travelled to Rumney to play their last game of the season in the knowledge that they had already secured the league and cup double.

Bargoed had played Rumney in their first game of the season coming out on top but only after a great battle with the Cardiff based outfit, who caused Bargoed plenty of problems.

Bargoed RFC vice captain Josh Prosser was playing his 200th game for Bargoed in the last game of the season.

The game started well with Bargoed dominant early on in terms of territory and possession. However good defence from the hosts held them out.

Bargoed continued to probe for an opening and good work saw lock Morgan Thomas score a try and Josh Prosser converted. The hosts hit back with a converted try shortly after.

Jordan Howells got Bargoed’s second try with Prosser converting and they led 14-7.

Hard working prop Keegan Bale crashed over from close range and Prosser converted to extend the lead. This didn’t last long though as the hosts struck back with another converted try.

Wing Dai Evans was next on the scorecard with a try but Rumney responded well and also scored shortly after with Bargoed leading 26-19 at half time.

The Bulls got an early second half try from Ashley Norton to increase the lead to 31-19. In extremely warm conditions it was becoming increasingly difficult for both sides, with both making changes and a few knocks affecting players from both sides in an extremely physical battle.

Rumney narrowed the gap to 31-26 after a converted try.

The home side now seemed to have momentum and scored again to take the lead and increased that shortly afterwards. However in an extremely tight encounter Bargoed stayed in the fight with two tries from Kieron Brown.

The hosts scored two more tries and led 47-43 going into the last five minutes of the game.

Rumney received a red card and Bargoed tried to take advantage of this and continued to battle to get back on top, but resolute defence kept them out.

Bargoed managed to get some field position after the hosts conceded a penalty. The Bulls were now applying significant pressure on the opposition in the red zone who conceded a second penalty.

Bargoed again went for the corner knowing that they had to score a try to clinch the victory. The Bulls had a series of drives but remained patient and eventually prop Josh Parry crashed over for a try converted by Josh Prosser to get the victory in the final and toughest game of the season.

The game ended Bargoed 50 Rumney 47 in what was a great battle and a superb spectacle for the neutral.

The Warriors travelled to Llanishen and played well but lost narrowly 14-12.

This week the Youth play Ebbw Vale in the Dragons Cup Final at Rodney Parade on Friday evening. Kick off is 7.45pm. Get along and support the boys.

The 1st XV will play in the new Community Premiership competition next season and the Warriors will make history by playing in the National Leagues for the first time in season 24-25.

Big thanks to all the players, coaches, management,  support staff, committee, volunteers and to our loyal band of supporters of all our teams from the Mini and Juniors, Youth and Seniors for all your hard work this season.

Good luck to the Youth on Friday!!
