Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed welcomed Ystalyfera to Bargoed Park for an entertaining and high scoring mid week National Championship game, which saw 12 tries scored in total.

Bargoed again rung the changes in selection with a number of these changes due to injuries. The games and unfortunately the     injuries are now coming thick and fast, as we approach the end of the season.

Bargoed had a great start with a try after 2 minutes from Matthew Lewis and they increased the lead when Centre Daf Carter crossed. Lewis added the extras with the boot to lead 12-0.

Matthew Lewis scored his second try after 19 minutes and the hosts lead 17-0 and appeared to be in the driving seat.

However the visitors were having none of it, and got themselves back in the game with a score in the corner which was converted to cut the lead to 17-7.

Hooker Kyle Bailey added to the try count, getting the bonus point try from a driving line-out but Ystalyfera were not prepared to lie down and scored another try to make the half time score 22-14 to Bargoed.

Bargoed made some changes at half time with Callum Merrick and Ali Gardiner-Key coming off the bench and a short time later they were joined by 18 year old youth player Morgan Small who also came on to make his 1st XV debut.

Bargoed were first to strike in the second half with Adam Jones scoring to take the lead to 27-14.

Bargoed lost full back Calum Jones to injury and he was replaced by his brother Steffan.

Ystalyfera battled back and when Bargoed’s Callum Merrick was yellow carded they took advantage to score a converted try and close the gap to 27-21

Bargoed showed some character though with 14 men and responded superbly with skilful prop Keegan Bale carrying well and finding space to crash over wide out, at a critical
Point in the game. This put some daylight between the sides with Bargoed leading 32-21.

Duane Dyer was the next to score a try for Bargoed converted by replacement Steff Jones but in this ding ding encounter the visitors scored again to claw back to an 11 point deficit, and all to play for.

Bargoed continued to press and looked like they would score but were turned over. However they closed the game out right at the end when Daf Carter’s persistence and work rate off the saw him charge down a clearance kick and crash over with a converted try and a final score of Bargoed 46 Ystalyfera 28.

Bargoed will be pleased with some of the attacking play in scoring eight tries with a much changed team, but will be disappointed by the defensive display which will need to improve, as we move into the latter stages of a long season.

Bargoed travel to Ystrad Rhondda on Saturday for a double header National Championship tie and Mid District Cup Semi Final. Kick off 2.30 pm.
