Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed Briefs

The 1st XV travelled to Mount Pleasant Park to play Mid District rivals Beddau RFC in an early kick off on Saturday

Bargoed started well but failed to capitalise on their early territorial advantage.

The home side defended well, and repelled the Bargoed attack. However, the Bulls had another opportunity and after a patient build up hooker Morgan Edwards crashed over for a try, converted by Josh Prosser.

Beddau responded well playing up the slope, and they started to put Bargoed on the back foot with some good carries and phase play. The Bulls conceded a penalty and Beddau reduced the lead to 7-3.

Bargoed’s discipline was preventing them getting the opportunity to apply pressure on the home side. Beddau took advantage to kick another penalty and make it 7-6.

Beddau scored on the back of a scrum penalty advantage and quickly moved the ball wide to expose Bargoed and get their first try to take the lead 11-7.

The Bulls hit back with half time looming and Morgan Edwards scored again after a close range attack. Josh Prosser converted to make the score 14-11 at the break.

Bargoed struck first in the second half with a hat trick try for Morgan Edwards to increase the lead to 19-11.

Bargoed managed to get their bonus point try on the hour with a well constructed try from Ashley Norton, converted by Prosser.

The Bulls looked in control at 26-11 but Beddau had other ideas , and kept working hard to close the gap. They were rewarded when they scored a converted try in the corner to close the gap to 26-18.

Five minutes later they scored again when a defensive error let them in, and with a well struck conversion it was 26-25 to Bargoed in a one point game, as we entered the latter part of the game.

Bargoed conceded another penalty, but Beddau missed a difficult kick that would have put them in front.

The Bulls managed the game well in the last five minutes to secure a narrow and hard fought win against a well drilled and committed home side who are rapidly improving, and will undoubtedly get some results in the coming weeks.

Bargoed will be pleased to get the five points but there will be a recognition that there needs to be improvements in accuracy and discipline against the challenge that the Met will bring.

The Youth travelled to near neighbours Abertysswg for a friendly, with ex Bargoed player Glen Carroll on the coaching staff at Aber.

Bargoed came unstuck in a disjointed and poor display that saw Abertysswg deservedly come out on top 17-7.

Bargoed’s points came from a penalty try.

This week the 1st XV travel to Cyncoed, Cardiff to take on Cardiff Met who currently sit on top of the Championship East table with Bargoed in second place in a top of the table clash.

The Warriors have a local derby against Nelson RFC and the Youth play against Ebbw Vale in the WRU Plate Quarter Final.

It’s a big weekend so please come along and give us your support!!
