Bargoed Briefs

Bargoed RFC Match Reports

This week saw the 1st XV and the Youth at home and both recorded wins. The Warriors were not in action this week.

1st XV Match Report

Bargoed made seven changes to the starting line up after their 36-32 victory at Cardiff Met last week for the visit of Maesteg Quins RFC who are always tough opponents.

Bargoed started well and took the lead after 8 minutes when Darren Humphries crashed over from close in to the Quins line. Josh Prosser converted to lead 7-0.

Bargoed were playing with great attacking ambition, with conditions that encouraged running rugby. They looked to attack with ball in hand, and they stretched the Quins after 11 minutes for Adam Jones to cross wide out, again converted by Prosser.

The visitors fought back and reduced Bargoed’s lead after a deserved try wide out to close the gap to 14-5 with 27 minutes gone.

However, Bargoed increased their lead after an interception with Dylan Williams scoring to lead 19-5.

The visitors cut the lead to 19-8 when they kicked a penalty. However Bargoed responded positively just before half time with a purple patch that resulted in two tries.

Bargoed launched a great counter attack and good work from Josh Prosser and Ollie Andrews in the build up saw James Leadbeater cross, for Bargoed’s bonus point try after 36 minutes.

Bargoed increased the lead after Calum Jones took a high ball and gave Bargoed the opportunity to counter attack with Adam Jones and James Locke carrying well. This enabled Wade Langley to release Dylan Williams for his second try with Prosser converting to make it 31-8 at half time.

Bargoed made some changes early in the second half with Kieron Brown, alongside 18 year old youth product Charlie Davies, making his National Championship debut in the back row.

Shortly after Corrie Thomas picked up an injury and Tom Rice replaced him with Lewys Lippiett also coming off the bench.

Bargoed scored the first try of the second half with Calum Jones, again making a positive contribution, making a break after 61 minutes and putting Josh Prosser over for a try to increase the lead to 36-8.

Bargoed were dominant at the set piece and great pressure at a scrum in the Quins 22 saw James Leadbeater get his second try after 68 minutes.

Bargoed continued to apply pressure on the Quins who defended with great resilience, but they eventually conceded another try through a quick tap as Tom Rice crossed for a try which was converted by replacement Steffan Jones to end the game with a 48-8 victory for the hosts.

Youth Match Report

The Youth welcomed Risca to Bargoed Park and came out on top in an entertaining game.

The squad has developed some depth over the last couple of weeks and are certainly on an upward trajectory in terms of performance, with the squad working hard to improve week on week.

There were eight tries scored by Bargoed with an impressive performance, in a well deserved 50-28 victory.

The try scorers were Iwan Jones 2,  Aaryn Palmer 2, Joey Hall, Harvey Jones, Logan Yendle and Kyle James, with Charlie Williams again impressing with the boot converting five of the tries.

There was an outstanding performance from man of the match Logan Yendle, but this was a real squad effort.

There was real cohesion in their attacking game, applying the scenarios that they have been facing in training to live situations on match day. This resulted in them creating and converting a number of try scoring opportunities.

Team Manager Leigh Meades stated ‘ The Boys clicked today and played some excellent rugby. It was nice to see what they’ve been doing in training and applying it in a game, and scoring some brilliant tries. We are really pleased with the progress that the boys are making. They are working hard and reaping the rewards’
