st XV Community Premiership Match Report
Bargoed travelled west to take on Llanelli Wanderers who were promoted from the National Championship.
Bargoed started well and had the upper hand territorially but a combination of good defence and a lack of urgency saw them penalised for holding on and the visitors failed to convert pressure into points.
The Wanderers got a foothold in the Bargoed 22 and remained patient and they took advantage of some poor defence to score a try that was converted, and lead 7-0.
Bargoed continued to play with ball in hand with Keegan Bale, Geraint Edmonds and Lewis Robey making the hard yards with some great ball carries.
Bargoed retained possession and good work saw Dylan Williams score to close the gap to 7-5 with 25 minutes gone.
The Wanderers struck back when a series of penalties against Bargoed saw them kick to the corner and crash over for a converted try to lead 14-5.
Bargoed had the chance to counter that after a line break but another error cost them.
They were also held up over the line and this failure to get more points through inaccuracy was clearly frustrating the players and coaches.
Bargoed started the second half well with the bench making an immediate impact, and Morgan Thomas crashed over for a try converted by Will Ford to make it 14-12
Bargoed had another opportunity but they conceded another penalty in the hosts 22 that enabled the hosts to clear their lines.
The Wanderers scored next when a few missed tackles saw their wing make a clean break and then look like they would score, but Bargoed obstructed their player and a penalty try and yellow card was awarded.
The hosts increased the lead to 21-12 with Bargoed now having to play with a man down with 16 minutes left on the clock.
Bargoed responded immediately when Ioan Duggan took a high ball and shrugged off a couple of tackles and good work from Owain Cooper saw Dylan Williams score to narrow the gap to 21-17 with young Will Ford unluckily hitting the post with the conversion attempt.
The Wanderers used their kicking game to good effect and from a scrum in the Bargoed half they moved the ball wide and scored through a chip and chase to lead 28-17.
The hosts were then awarded a penalty which they kicked to increase the lead to 31-17
Bargoed continued to attack in the same vein from the kick off stretching the home sides defence. This resulted in a try from Jonny Wright converted by Will Ford. However it was just too late as the final whistle went with the hosts winning 31-24.
Bargoed dominated for long periods but were not clinical enough when opportunities were created. However on a positive note from a disappointing result, they did pick up two bonus points.
The Coaching Team will work hard to prepare the players for the next challenge. They know that improvements are needed as they prepare for the next game against Cardiff Met on 15 November.
